The firm is based on previous professional experience, since 1990, of Eng. Claudio Modena, Full Professor of Structural Engineering at University of Padua. SM Ingegneria operates in the field of civil engineering dealing with road infrastructures, building and industrial structures, special structures and foundations. The firm is highly skilled in restoration of historic masonry buildings, seismic adjustment and consolidation of reinforced concrete buildings and bridges. In these areas the engineering firm developed highly specialized technical and scientific aspects and advanced applications tools for structural analysis (e.g. theoretical-experimental methods of evaluation of structural efficiency of buildings and bridges) and constructive technologies (e.g. by using of the fibre-reinforced polymer both in monumental building and transport infrastructures).




CHAIRMAN AND DIRECTOR Chairman and director of SM Ingegneria is Prof. Claudio Modena, born on June 12, 1946 in Sommacampagna (VR), Italy. He graduated "summa cum laude" in Civil Engineering from the University of Padua (www.dicea.unipd.it) in 1970. He received a triennial Research Scholarship from the Ministry of Education and in 1974 he was appointed Assistant Professor of Structural Engineering at Padua University. Prof. Claudio Modena is Full Professor of Structural Engineering and director of the Material Testing Laboratory at the Department of Structural Engineering of University of Padua. He is also a Technical and Scientific Head of SIL – Integrated System of University and Independent Laboratories in Padua Since 2000 he has held the course of "Structural Problems of Monumental Historical Heritage" in Architectural and Building Engineering and the specializing course of "Historical Constructions Restoration" for Architects and Engineers Since 2002 Prof. Claudio Modena has been a Postgraduate Master Course Director in: Structural restoration of monuments and historic buildings Infrastructure design with regard to the accomplishment of the territorial designs Prof. Claudio Modena has been admitted into the Association of Engineers of Verona, Italy, with no. 830, since 11/03/71. He is also a registered technical tester specialist for constructions, bridges, buildings and special structures.

For several years external members of team have participated in activities of the firm, so they have a good knowledge of working procedures and operative hardware and software. Moreover, when required, SM Ingegneria works together with qualified laboratories and consultants which provide a variety of support activities such as on-site measurements, surveys and tests in order to define the physical, chemical and mechanical parameters of existing structures.




RESTORATION PROJECTS In the field of conservation and restoration SM Ingegneria has been involved in numerous interventions of static consolidation, most of all, of the important monumental buildings. St. Joseph's Oratory of Minims in Aquila: restoration and consolidation of the oratory, repairing the damage caused by Earthquake of April 6, 2009. The activities included the final design of interventions of structural consolidation, analysis and seismic verification of the structure. Church of San Marco in L'Aquila: structural consultancy on behalf of the Veneto Region in the context of actions for the recovery of the church of San Marco in the historic center of L'Aquila, badly damaged by the earthquake of 6 April 2009. The project, funded by the Veneto Region, provides a first phase of construction of temporary structures for retaining the tip of the walls and roof of the apse. Within the project of securing, the University of Padua has installed a system for monitoring and analysis of the main lesions of the dynamic behavior of the structure. The second phase, currently, provides the structural and architectural restoration of the church.

Church of St. Peter the Apostle (Onna, L'Aquila): recovery, consolidation and restoration of the church and outbuildings in Onna, near L'Aquila, repairing the damage caused by Earthquake of April 6, 2009. In collaboration with Ing. Cesare Cimino, Arch. Marsili and Dr. Corrado, Bianca Maria Colassacco (Office Deputy Commissioner delegate for the Protection of Cultural Heritage) on behalf of the Interregional Public Works for Lazio, Abruzzo and Sardinia. The activities have included surveys and the coordination of site investigation and the final design of the restoration of architectural and structural reinforcement.

Church of San Domenico in L'Aquila, design, with the architect Paolo Rocchi, and assistance for the recovery of the church in the historic center of L'Aquila, damaged by the earthquake of 6 April 2009 on behalf of the Interregional Public Works for Lazio, Abruzzo and Sardinia. The activities have included the design for the safety, running a campaign site investigation for the characterization of materials and structure, design and installation of a monitoring system of the structure, study and verification of static structural and seismic behavior of the church, the project of restoration and architectural structure.

Church of San Biagio d'Amiterno in Aquila, restoration and consolidation of the church, following the damage caused by Earthquake of April 6, 2009, in collaboration with and on behalf of the arch. Salvatore Tringali and Rosanna La Rosa. The activities have covered the final design of structural consolidation, analysis and seismic verification of the structure.

Teatro Nazionale d'Abruzzo in L'Aquila, works of consolidation and restoration of the theatre, repairing the damage caused by Earthquake of April 6, 2009, in collaboration with arch. Gianlorenzo Conti and arch. Joseph Santoro, on behalf of the office of Vice-Deputy Commissioner for the Protection of Cultural Heritage. The object of activities have included the analysis of the structure and damage, the coordination of site investigation to define the characteristics of the materials and structure (performed by ESSEBI and Expin Ltd., spin-off of the University of Padua), mathematical modeling and kinematic calculation for determining the seismic behavior of the structure, the preliminary design of the restoration and consolidation (amount of work equal to about 12 million euros) and the final design of structural (amount 1.2 million euros).

Prefecture Square Consortium in L’Aquila, technical consulting for the project of restoration, consolidation and seismic improvement of the aggregate between Via Francesco di Paola, the Prefecture square, Donadei St, Piscignola St. In collaboration with Ing. Roberto Scimia, Reluis University Consortium, University of Padua, Department Vice-Deputy Commissioner for the Protection of Cultural Heritage. The activities have included the measurement of the geometrical structure and the damage, mathematical modeling and computation for seismic kinematic structure, the project of restoration and costs estimate.

Ongoing activities include the design and coordination of surveys, inspections and investigations to characterize the materials of the structures, fem modeling, structural analysis and verification.

Cooling Station in the area of the Old General Stores in Verona, structural design for reuse as a theater-auditorium, in collaboration with arch.
