Unlocking Potentials in Maritime Transport and Services
“…. Sabah has a strategic location in the vibrant ASEAN market while its potential of being a hub for trading and investments is tremendous.”
• Is Sabah strategically positioned in the global maritime corridors?
• Are there opportunities to make Sabah a Hub?

EXPORT
Unlocking Potentials in Maritime Transport and Services
1. East Malaysia – (ref East Malaysia roadmap)
Currently limited feeder operators and carriers calling main ports of East Malaysia. 4 local players, and 3 main line operators calling selected deep(er)-water ports; No or limited berthing windows in most ports due to limited development done in past years.
Except for Samalaju (Bintulu), no major containerised export industries. KKIP to be the next containerised export location?Largely overall an import imbalance area
1. Sabah specifically
Main container export location Kota Kinabalu; Sandakan, Tawau (and POIC Lahad Datusoon); Primary industries driven by agriculture (rubber, copra, cocoa, palm oil), forestry (timber) and petroleum. Some reefers ex Tawau. LNG/Oil bulk exportsPrimarily Import driven (capital goods) resulting in huge empty repositioning of containers
Largely undeveloped Eastern Sabah although some progress is slowly pursued; still bulk dominated. Slow SME growth.
TODAY ……

Unlocking Potentials in Maritime Transport and Services
1. Strategic LocationSabah is not on the main shipping route. A need to make Sabah “sufficiently attractive” to the vessel owners. Bunkering Center – LNG, LSFO options available today? With vessels calling at Sabah, there is spill over economic VAS (estimated 1.25 times?); Anciallary services eg warehousing for ship spares, regional distribution centers
Maintain Bulk position while building your containerised capacity
2. Hub3 main line container operators do NOT make a Hub. Worldwide connectivity and options are needed. Chicken vs Egg : Do you develop industries first or do you develop the ports first?
Open up to more container shipping line operators
Tomorrow …… (from a maritime perspective)
