Strategy Magazine, designed to be a substructure sector publication beyond a corporate magazine and to include many sectoral analyses, ad- dresses the course of Turkish economy in an objective perspective. In this first issue, we have made sure to focus on subjects and sectors which are currently on the economic agenda of Turkey. Within the 2023 Vision of Turkey file which was included as the cover story, we have focused on important projects which will be realized within the scope of 2023 Vision of the government. The year 2013 was one that was crucial in terms of projects to be realized towards this vision. Projects such as the Third Airport, the Third Bospho- rus Bridge and Kanal stanbul, which is declared to be the dream project of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoan, are significant for being giant projects not only in Turkey but also in the world. We believe that Turkey will take a substantial step towards the 2023 Vision with these projects which will also accelerate economic and social development. Another featured file of this issue is the analysis titled Turkeys Disembarkment in Africa. Our foreign policy shifted focus towards African countries when Ahmet Davutolu took the office as Minister of Foreign Affairs. Both Prime Minister Erdoans recent visit to Africa and the 23rd World Economic Forum held in Cape Town, the capital of South Africa, attracted global attention to Africa. Binali Yldrm, Minister of Transport, Maritime Affairs, and Communications stated that the investment for the bridge was estimated to be around $2,5 billion and that they planned to put it into service in 2015. he presentation of zmir which competes for EXPO 2020 with the theme New Routes to a Better World/Health for All was well-received. The presentation showed that a precious seaside land in zmir was allocated for the organization. To build tourism facilities, hospitals, SPA and entertainment centers on an area of 690 hectare is foreseen. 276 hectare of these areas would be used as EXPO area. Steel export has constituted more than 10% of the total export in Turkey by the end of first 5 months. O ne of the major reasons of Turkeys current deficit, energy import has decreased by 9.9% within the first 5 months of this year. The disbursement paid out for import of energy products such as oil, gas was $20 billion same period last year. As a result of this decrease, it fell below $18 billion. Thus, en- ergy products share of 26.4% within total import decreased to 22.1% same period this year. According to the law, Turkey will be territorial- ized in two petroleum areas as land and sea, instead of 18. Exploration licence will be given for making explorations, making researches, producing petroleum from explored oil areas and appyling for explora- tion. The applicant will secure 2% of the investment amount required for the business schedule offered in licence application. This rate will be applied as 1% in seas. Areas with expired operating rights will be allowed to be auctioned upon Ministers approval in order to be given operating licence. The public share taken from produced petro- leum will be based on market price instead of per well price. While Turkey is ex- pected to continue growing more than global and European averages until 2020, large scale energy investments have to be realized to sup- port this growth. The energy sector is currently transforming into a competitive market thanks to privatization processes, and the market has been recently witnessing rapid growth due to privatizations, licensing tenders and strategic partnerships. Another fact that places Turkey among the favorite markets in the eyes of investors is the 6.3 percent annual increase in the national electric consumption according to data by the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources. An annual investment volume of $5 billion in the sector is required to avoid a national energy crisis. An intergovernmental agreement regarding the construction and operation of a nuclear power plant in Akkuyu area was inked in 2010 between Turkey and Russia. Why did you choose to invest on Turkey, specifically on Mersin Inter- national Port? Can you give your investment budget? Mersin was the first major port privatization pro- ject in Turkey. PSA believed that it could marry its world wide experience and leadership position in the ports sector with a young, dynamic and fast growing market, in particular Mersin, and make a difference in the local community in which it is invested in. We are very happy to have been able to achieve credible results so far with our partner in Mersin. You are very concerned on the issue of port safety. Are you planning to implement your experiences on Mersin International Port? Ensuring a safe working environment for our employees and port users is extremely important for PSA. We have regular reviews of the work practices of all our terminals worldwide to ensure they comply with the highest safety standards on a global basis. We do this by sharing and codifying best practices and experiences globally across all the terminals we are operating in, inclu- ding at MIP. PSA is one of the worlds biggest port opera- tors and has many ports around the world. Are you planning to operate any port other than Mersin in Turkey? And can you define the ad- vantages to operate the Mersin Port to extend your operation in the region? We are constantly looking for attractive and me- aningful investment opportunities where we can add value, and will definitely be interested in furt- her investments in Turkey if the right opportunity presents itself. Mersin is a good starting point as it has enabled us to acquire knowledge and experience about doing business in Turkey. This will stand us in good stead if and when we decide to make further investments in the country. Due to the civil war-like situation in Syria, Turkeys land transportation to the Middle East and the North Africa via Syria has collap- sed for a while. Then, Ro-Ro shipping started from Mersin to Egypt to overcome the side effects of this situation. How much did you invest to develop such shipping operations in Mersin? Are you planning to add new routes? We are constantly on the look-out for new business opportunities and markets, and
