School Application Process Every 9th and 10th grade student will be in career

academy starting 2013-2014 school year Cesar Chavez Middle School – only middle school in

the feeder pattern- 350 students – automatically attend

125 students can be accepted from outside the feeder pattern with the only requirement is to select one of the career academies

No student is denied because of grades, discipline, or attendance issues

Board Recruitment: Waco is a small urban city with limited

businesses – it was important to be creative and think outside the box when creating an Advisory Board.

Began with three career academies- Engineering, Business & Finance, and Information Technology. Targeted businesses that supported these

academies and invited them to meet concerning the school and assisting with its growth.

Board Recruitment (cont’d) Explained the NAF Advisory Board Model and

opened it up for guests to give feedback on what we could do to get a Board started.

Positive feedback and core group got under way in creating the beginning of the Advisory Board as we know it.

As academies were brought on, businesses were targeted to be invited to join.

Board Members. Letters of invitation signed by members, followed up by members call to invite them again, and member calls after the recruitment meeting to invite them to join.

Recruitment Breakfast’s highlights student presentations who have completed internships, the opportunity to share their experiences. Each academy is also focused with interactive

presentations to help visitors understand what students learn in each academy.

Board Retention: Key to retention is having members be a part

of the committee structure which allows them to feel that they are contributing to the Board’s goals.

Provide opportunities for members to assist in planning and supporting activities; especially fundraising

This year, we are beginning a Board Member Mentor Program to help new members feel welcomed and vital.

It explains in detail information about the academies and their structure. A lot of the information was discussed in our presentation. We have copies of the report for your review.
