In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning.

Au commencement était celui qui est la Parole de Dieu. Il était avec Dieu, il était lui-même Dieu. Il était donc avec Dieu au commencement.

Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.

Tout a été créé par lui; rien de ce qui a été créé n'a été créé sans lui.

In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind.

En lui résidait la vie, et cette vie était la lumière des hommes.

The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

La lumière brille dans les ténèbres et les ténèbres ne l'ont pas étouffée.

There was a man sent from God whose name was John. He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all might believe. He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light.

Dieu envoya son messager, un homme appelé Jean. Il vint comme témoin, pour rendre témoignage à la lumière, afin que tous croient grâce à lui. Il n'était pas lui-même la lumière, mais il devait rendre témoignage à la lumière.

The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world.

Celle-ci était la véritable lumière, celle qui, en venant dans le monde, éclaire tout être humain.

He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him.

Celui qui est la Parole était dans le monde. Dieu a fait le monde par lui , et pourtant le monde ne l'a pas reconnu.

He came to His own, and those who were His own did not receive Him.

Il est venu dans son propre pays , mais les siens ne l'ont pas accueilli.

Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God — children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision, but born of God.

Certains pourtant l'ont accueilli; ils ont cru en lui. A tous ceux-là, il a accordé le privilège de devenir enfants de Dieu. Ce n'est pas par une naissance naturelle, ni sous par la volonté d'un homme, qu'ils le sont devenus; mais c'est de Dieu qu'ils sont nés.

The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.
