MASDAR : LA CIUDAD DE “CERO CARBONO” EN EL DESIERTO.

En el sur de Abu Dhabi, en los Emiratos Árabes Unidos, se está construyendo Masdar, una ciudad que no emitiría emisiones de carbono para compensar la huella del mismo elemento proveniente de la explotación de combustibles fósiles que se realiza en la región. Los edificios serán envueltos en paneles solares y tendrán un ángulo para capturar la energía del viento. El sistema de transporte sería con vías exclusivas para vehículos personales que funcionarían con energía eléctrica. El agua se podría reci-clar y los residuos se utilizarían como fertilizantes y fuentes de energía.

Frente a todos estos beneficios que otorgaría la ciudad, los detractores dudan de las ambiciones del proyecto y su verdadero impacto medioambiental, puesto que consideran la idea “demasiado efectista”. Sin embargo, el informe de la ONU considera a Masdar “un ejemplo de cómo asegurar la inversión en una visión sostenible”.

1.10 An Armature for Flexible Growth

A sustainable urban strategy is composed of multiple, superimposed networks and systems.

One of the most basic elements of a city is what often is referred to as the “grid”, which sets the patterns, alignments and dimensions of streets. A well conceived and calibrated grid undergirds, organizes and anticipates the other networks and systems that go into the making of a city. A good grid is rigorous, systematic and logical, yet enables the exceptional and the particular to occur within it as well.

Streets, blocks, buildings, performative landscapes, tram systems, energy networks, paths, promenades, civic landscapes when properly inter-related form a network, as depicted in this plan, of a synthetic urban whole that is vastly greater than the sum of the parts.

Stormwater can be managed through the use of local, on-site landscapes that provide natural storage and treatment of runoff waters, greatly reducing the greywater footprint of the site. Managing the water footprint at the scale of the development provides multiple benefits: greatly reduced energy consumption and infrastructure maintenance for stormwater management, improved water quality, and the introduction of naturalized landscape elements in the built environment.

The luminous presence of water extends deep into the fabric of Jätkäsaari, connecting land and sea.

The proposed south facing streets open to a view of the water, which acts as a lively reflector, amplifying the perception of light in the street. Topography also plays a powerful role in the orientation of the street. The average slope of the streets is a rate of 1.5°, which not only increases the relative angle of the sun from 7 to 8.5°, but also dramatically increases the view of the sea from street-level.
