Expressing Opinion
Opinion- how an individual feels about something.*Note: An opinion may contain or be based on facts, but an
opinion should never be stated as a fact.
Expressing Personal Opinions
• Start with a phrase like:• In my experience…• As far as I'm concerned…• Speaking for myself…• In my opinion…• Personally, I think…• I'd say that…• I'd suggest that…• I'd like to point out that…• I believe that…• What I mean is…

• State your opinion• Ex. “I think that the library should be open
longer.”
• Then, provide reasons and evidence to support your opinion.• Examples:• “It closes at 8 pm, and I am usually studying
until 10 pm, which means I have to find a new place to go.”
• “It is inconvenient to have to interrupt my studying.”
Expressing General Opinion
• To express general points of view, start with: • It is thought that...• Some people say that...• It is considered...• It is generally accepted that...

• Then, make the opinion clear, in statement form.• Ex. “Many people say that he is a bad leader.”
• Then, provide reasons and details to support the opinion.• Examples:• “He is a poor public speaker.”• “He has made our relationships worse, not
better.”
Responding To Opinion
• You can agree or disagree.
Agreeing with an Opinion
• Of course.
• You're absolutely right.
• Yes, I agree.
• I think so too.
• That's a good point.
• Exactly.
• I don't think so either.
• So do I.
• I'd go along with that.
• That's true.
• Neither do I.
• I agree with you entirely.
• That's just what I was thinking.
• I couldn't agree more.

Disagreeing with an Opinion
• That's different.
• I don't agree with you.
• However…
• That's not entirely true.
• On the contrary…
• I'm sorry to disagree with you, but…
