I. The End of the Greek City-StatesA. KingPhilip II.-Macedonian leader who invaded Greece, defeated the Greek city-States, and united the Greek city-states as one. a. Used the military strategy, phalanx, to defeat the Greeks. b.Phalanx-A military formation composed of rows of soldiers standing shoulder to shoulder carrying spikes or heavy spears in the shape of a square.

I. The End of the Greek City-States ContinuedB.Alexander the Great- Son of Philip II, he created the largest empire, and it was the largest the world had ever known until that time. a. He came to power at 20 years of age after the death of his father. b. His teacher was the Greek philosopher Aristotle c. He defeated the following civilizations: Persia, Egypt (Egyptians made him a Pharaoh), and the Indus River valley. d.He is given a lot of credit for spreading Greek Culture throughout the known world andinfluencingWestern culture including the United States.

II. Hellenistic PeriodII.Hellenistic Period- A. Alexander the Great died in 323 B.C. - The time period after his death is called theHellenistic Period. B.Hellenistic Period-"Greek-like" -word used to describe a newblended culturethat combined Greek ideas with elements of Persian, Egyptian, Syrian and other cultures., after Alexander the Great's death.

II. Hellenistic Period Continued1. Culture during this time period was a mostly Greek culture but also made up of other cultures including Egyptian, Persian, Hebrew, and Indian cultures. It was a melting pot. 1. Greek art, literature, and science spread into Alexander's conquered lands. 2. You see Greek-like columns throughout the world. 3. The ideas fromAthenianDemocracy spread to others including Rome and eventually the United States. 4. Major Greek writings on history philosophy (Socrates, Plato, Aristotle) and Mythology (Greek gods and goddesses) was spread throughout the world. 5. Greek theater such astragediesand comedies was spread.
