Forsendur sem liggja til grundvallar hagkvæmni gagnsemi eignarréttarins:

Auðlindir eru uppspretta auðs og nýting þeirra er samfélagsleg nauðsyn

Auðlindir í sameign eða án eiganda eru annað hvort vannýttar eða ofnýttar en hvoru tveggja er samfélagslega óhagkvæmt

Eigandi er meðvitaður um eðli og takmarkanir auðlindarinnar og hefur hag af

að nýta auðlindina og koma í veg fyrir ofnýtingu og vannýtingu.
