There is/are object

“X が あります” means “there is/are X (nonliving object).” g a a r i m a s u

The particle “が” introduces, or presents, the item X. You g a

can use “あります” when you want to say that there is a r i m a s u

something at a certain location.

いっかい に うけつけ が あります。i k k a i n i u k e t s u k e g a a r i m a s u

There is a reception desk on the first floor.

Note that “あります” is different from other verbs we have a r i m a s u

seen so far on the following three counts.

1) It calls for the particle “に”, rather than “で”, for the place description.n i d e

2) The place description usually comes at the beginning of the sentence.

3) The thing description is usually followed by the particle “が”, rather than “は”.

When you want to present a person or some other

sentient being such as animals and insects, you need to

use the verb “います”i m a s u

There is a man on the first floor of the basement.

Note that the same verb “is” in English comes out

differently in Japanese:

Mr. Sasaki is a man.

“～がいます” and “～があります” are strictly for descriptions of existence and g a i m a s u g a a r i m a s u

location, while “は～です” is for description of an attribute of a person or a w a d e s u

thing.
