Matthias Wholley - Excelling at the U.S. Coast Guard
Academy
As an admissions officer for the United States Coast Guard Academy (USCGA), Matthias Wholley recruits students, reviews applications, and makes recommendations to the admissions committee.
Matthias Wholley also helps students and parents throughout the admissions process.
What type of student excels at the Coast Guard Academy? The following characteristics make for a successful four years there:
Academic rigor and intellectual curiosity. The USCGA offers a four-year academic program with an emphasis on math, science, and engineering.
Successful applicants to one of the most selective schools in the country receive an average score of 650 on the math portion of the Scholastic Aptitude Test and 620 on the critical reading portion.
Leadership skills. The academy's motto, "Scientiae Credit Mare," translates as "The sea yields to knowledge."
The motto signifies that cadets are able and willing to step up as leaders and understand that leadership is earned.
Athletic prowess. Physical fitness is a prerequisite of acceptance; applicants must pass a physical fitness exam that includes a push-up test, a sit-up test, and a 1.5-mile run.
Once enrolled, students participate in fitness programs and competitive sports.
