Negative Sentence

ประโยค negative คอประโยคทมใจความปฏเสธ ซงจะมคำา ปฏเสธ (negative words) เหลานอย no, none, nothing,

nobody, nowhere, never, neither, nor หรอประโยคทถกทำาใหเปนปฏเสธโดยการ เตม adverb “not” เขาไปในประโยค

หลกการเตม not: เมอมคำากรยา 2 “คำา อยในประโยค เราจะเตม not” ไวทหลง

กรยาชวย He cannot (can’t) work. He is not (isn’t) working. He has not (hasn’t) worked. He has not (hasn’t) been working. He should not (shouldn’t) have worked.

ถาในประโยคมคำากรยาเพยง 1 คำา กใหเปลยนรปกรยา กลบไปเปนรปธรรมดา คอ infinitive without to แลวเตม do,

does, หรอ did + notI do not know .

He does not know . We did not know .

ในกรณทเปน verb “be” หรอ verb “have นน ไมตอง เตม do “ใหใส not” ไวหลงกรยาไดเลย

I am not afraid. You are not late. We have not much. I had not the time to do it.

หลกการใช no, none, และ any

no , none , one , nobody , nothing , nowhereคำาทงหมดขางตนตางเปนคำาปฏเสธหรอคำาทแสดง

ผลในทางลบ (negative words) ซงมกจะใชคำาเหลานในการเรมตนประโยคหรอใชอยางโดดเดยวในรปของการ

  ปฏเสธหรอแสดงผลในทางลบ ดงตวอยาง

No one (or Nobody) came to visit me when I was in the hospital.No system of government is perfect.Where are you going? Nowhere. I’m staying here.None of these books are mine.What did you do? Nothing.

สามารถใชคำาเหลานตรงกลางหรอตอนทายของประโยคกได  แต จะตองไมใช not กบคำาเหลานเปนอนขาด  ทงนเพราะตางเปนคำาในรป

ปฏเสธหรอคำาทแสดงผลในทางลบอยแ   ลว เชนI saw nothing. (จะตองไมใชวา I didn’t see nothing.)

    และตรงกลางหรอตอนทายของประโยค นยมใช not…+any/ anyone/ anybody/ anything/ anywhere   ดวยเชนเดยวกน ดงตวอยาง

I didn’t (did not) see anything. (= I saw nothing.)We don’t have any money. (=We have no money.)The station isn’t anywhere near here. (=…is nowhere near

hear.)She didn’t tell anyone about her plans.** แตในกรณทมคำาในรปปฏเสธ (negative words) อนๆ อยแลว

  ไมจำาเปนตองใช not   ในรปประโยคนนๆ เชนNobody tells me anything. (=People don’t tell me anything.)

2. no  และ none   มความหมายทเหมอนกนคอ not a   หรอ not any แตมลกษณะการใชทแตกตางกนดงน

1)  ใช no กบคำานาม (Nouns) ดงตวอยาง We had to walk because there was no bus. (= there was not a bus หรอthere wasnot any buses) I can’t talk to you now. I have no time. (= I do not have any time.) There were no stores open. (= There were not any stores open.)

2)   ใช none   ไดสองรปแบบดวยกน คอa)   ใชอยางโดเดยวโดยไมมคำานาม (Nouns) เชน

How much money do you have? None.b)   ใชในรปของ none of ตามลกษณะดงน

None of these shops/ none of my money/ none of it/ none of us/ none of you/ none of them, etc.

****  สงทตองจำา   คำานาม (Noun)   ขางหลง none of   จะตองเปน คำาพหพจน (plural words) เสมอ (   อยางเชน none of the girls/ none of them, etc.) แตสำาหรบคำากรยา (Verb) สามารถใชไดทงในรป   ของ เอกพจน (Singular)

  และ พหพจน (Plural) แตสวนใหญนยมใชในรปของพหพจน   มากกวา เชน None of the people I met were English.

3.   ขางหลงของ no one   และ nobody   ตองใช they, them,  หรอ their ดงตวอยาง

Nobody called, did they? (   หมายถง did he?   หรอ did she?)

No one in this class did their homework (   หมายถง did his homework   หรอ did her homework)

หลกการใช Neither…norNeither...nor มความหมายวา>>>  ไมทงสองอยาง

Neither + Subject 1 + nor + Subject 2( ขอควรจำา : กรยาในประโยคนน ผนตามประธานทอยตดกบกรยาหรอ

ประธานตวท 2 นนเอง)Neither Jack nor Jim can drive.

ทงแจคและจม ไมมใครขบรถไดเลย(* การใช Neither...nor ถงแมจะเปนประโยคบอกเลาแตใหความหมายในเชงปฏเสธ)

Neither Fred nor Sara is free.ทงเฟรดและซาราไมมใครวางเลย

****Neither สามารถใชเดยวๆโดยทไมตองม norThis match was disappointing. Neither team play well.

เกมนนาผดหวงมากๆ เลนไมดทงสองทมเลย(Neither นำาหนานาม team แปลวา ไมทงสองทม)

**** nor กสามารถอยไดเดยวๆเหมอนกน ในกรณน nor จะเชอมประโยคสองประโยคเขาดวยกนเพอ

บอกความเปนปฏเสธ เชนShe cannot speak France ,nor can she speaks English.เธอพดภาษาฝรงเศสไมไดและกพดภาษาองกฤษไมไดดวย

(** ขอสงเกต : ประโยคแรกจะเปนประโยคปฏเสธกอน สวน ประโยคหลงจะเปนบอกเลา แตประโยคหลงใหเราเอากรยาชวย ซง

ตามตวอยางกคอ can มาไวกอนประธาน ความหมายจะเปนปฏเสธในตวของมนเองเลย)

I don't expect children to be rude, nor do I expect to be disobeye ฉนไมคาดหวงใหเดกทำาตวหยาบคายและกไมหวงใหทำาตวไมเชอฟงดวย

Position of the Negative:

A BI think he won’t come. I don’t think he’ll come.

I suppose it isn’t true. I don’t suppose it’s true.

I believe that I can’t stand a week of this.

I don’t believe that I can stand a week of this.

I suppose I shan’t do it again for months and months.

I don’t suppose I shall do it again for months and months.

จากตำาแหนงการวางคำาปฏเสธในประโยคตวอยาง ในตาราง ถงแมวาสำาหรบคนไทยตวอยางประโยคชด A จะ

ดเปนธรรมชาต และดเหมอนจะถกตองมากกวาตวอยาง ชด B แตสำาหรบผใชภาษาองกฤษเปนภาษาแมนน เขามก

จะวางคำาปฏเสธไวทตนประโยคอยางในตวอยางชด B มากกวา

แตกมขอควรระวง เพราะการสลบตำาแหนงของคำาปฏเสธแบบนใชไดเฉพาะกบกรยาทแสดง

ความรสกนกคด เชน suppose, think, believe สวน กรยาทแสดงการกระทำา เชน tell, ask นน เราไม

สามารถสลบตำาแหนงของคำาปฏเสธได เพราะจะ ทำาใหความหมายเปลยนไป ดงตวอยางตอไปน

A. He didn’t tell me he would be there.B. He told me he wouldn’t be there.

A. I didn’t ask him to come.B. I asked him not to come.

Emphatic Negation:

เราสามารถเนนใจความปฏเสธไดโดยการใช no แทน เชน

This won’t be an easy matter.This will be no easy matter.

เราสามารถเนนใจความปฏเสธใหหนกแนนกวาเดมดวย “การเตม at all” หลกการนใชไดกบคำาปฏเสธเกอบ ทงหมด ยกเวน neither และ nor

I saw nothing at all.Nothing matters at all.There was nobody at all.

สวน not สามารถทำาใหหนกแนนขนโดยการเตม วล a bit, the least bit, in the least, by a long way

เขาไป

I am not a bit tired.I am not the least bit tired.I am not tired in the least.isn’t rich by a long way. (He is far from rich.)

Double Negation: การมคำาปฏเสธสองคำาในประโยคเดยวกนนน ทำาให

ความหมายของประโยคนนเปลยนจาก negative เปน affirmative ลองเปรยบเทยบตวอยางประโยคตอไปน

บอกเลา: It is common for the son of a millionaire to marry a poor girl. เปนเรองปกตธรรมดาทลกชายเศรษฐจะไปแตงงานกบเดกหญงยากจน

ปฏเสธ:It is uncommon for the son of a millionaire to marry a poor girl. เปนเรองไมปกตธรรมดาทลกชายเศรษฐจะไปแตงงานกบเดกหญงยากจน

• ปฏเสธซอนปฏเสธ:

It is not uncommon for the son of a millionaire to marry a poor girl. ไมใชเรองไมปกตธรรมดาทลกชายเศรษฐจะไปแตงงานกบเดกหญงยากจน

He went to work as usual, though not without some fear. เขาไปทำางานเหมอนปกตแลว แมจะยงมความกลวอยบาง (ไมใชไมกลว)

He doesn’t do it for nothing.  เขาไมไดทำามนโดยไมไดหวงอะไร

Nothing is nothing at all. (Everything is of some importance.)ไมมสงใดเลยทไรความหมายไปเสยทงหมด

อยางไรกตาม การใชคำาปฏเสธซอนปฏเสธในภาษา ตลาด มกใชเพอ สอความหมายในเชงปฏเสธ เชน

I don’t know nothing. = I don’t know anything. There isn’t no such thing. = There isn’t such a thing. I won’t give nobody nothing no more. = I won’t give anybody anything any more.

ประโยคคำาถามปฏเสธหรอ Negative Questions?เปนประโยคคำาถามชนดหนงทมลกษณะการถามและคำาทใช

 ถามคลายกบประโยคคำาถามประเภท yes/no questions เพราะคำาทนำามาใชขนตนในการถามกคอกรยาชวยทใชใน

 ประโยคคำาถามประเภท yes/no questions เพยงแตนำามา ใชในรปปฏเสธ และตองยอรปปฏเสธของกรยาชวยดง

กลาวดวย เราสามารถนำากรยาชวยมาใชในการถามปฏเสธไดทกคำาโดยขนอยกบบรบทของการสนทนาและมกใชคำาถามปฏเสธเพอแสดงความแปลกใจหรอประหลาดใจ

A:Didn't you hear the ring? I called you three times two hours ago. B:No, I didn't. I was sleeping.
