Teaching approach: The lesson is delivered under the Communicative approach. Integration of skills: in this lesson plan, students will develop speaking skills when they work in groups and

while discussing and interacting with the teacher and the rest of the classmates about healthy food; writing skills when giving advice and reading skills during the last activity.

Materials and resources: mind map, picture with healthy and unhealthy habits, empty piece of paper, model copy, students’ routine, the article.

Pedagogical use of ICT in class or at home: We won’t use ICT during this lesson. Seating arrangement: Students will sit in groups of four people to complete each activity. Possible problems / difficulties and their possible solutions during the class: If any student does not

understand instructions I will paraphrase them. Furthermore, I will check that each student work and gives his opinion while working in group (especially shy students).

Classroom management strategies: Students will be able to choose their groups. If this does not work, I will ask them to change to another group or work alone.

Potential problems students may have with the language: I will leave written examples on board of new structures. If this is not necessary we will work altogether until they are able to complete the rest of the activity in the group.

Assessment: I will check students’ comprehension asking individual questions if I believe that they did not understand the activity. I will also check students correct participation, encouraging them to provide the correct answer.

WARM-UP (5 minutes)

I will say hello to the students. “Good morning! How are you?” EA: Good morning, fine, thank you!” and I will add: “Tell me about this last week, did you add any new vegetable to your diet?” EA: No / Yes / Tomatoes, etc. I will add “Do you believe that healthy eating habits are enough for a healthy lifestyle?” EA: Yes/No.

MODEL

There are many things you can do to have a healthy life. On the one hand … (healthy habits – You should eat vegetables everyday ….). On the other hand … (unhealthy habits – You shouldn’t smoke because … / You should avoid …)

Transition: “Well done everybody! I will paste the posters later on the wall.”

ACTIVITY 3 (20 minutes)

“I will give you two texts about two older students’ routine. First, you are going to complete them and read them carefully.”

Luciana is 12 years old. She (go) _GOES__ to school in the morning and (come) _COMES__ back home at 2 in the afternoon. Then, she (take) _TAKES__ a shower and she (have) _HAS__ lunch. Luci usually (eat) _EATS__ vegetables and some meat, she (like) _LIKES__ drinking water or juice. After that, she (brush) _BRUSHES__ her teeth. In the evening, Luci (walk) _WALKS__ to the sport center. There, she (play) _PLAYS__ tennis or (do) _DOES__ some exercise. When she (be) _IS__ hungry, she always (eat) _EATS__ some fruit. Luci never (go) _GOES__ to bed after ten because she (need) _NEES__ to get enough rest to get up early in the morning.

before that he (like) _LIKES__ playing computer games. He usually (stay) _STAYS__ at home all day at weekends.Source: https://en.islcollective.com/resources/printables/worksheets_doc_docx/healthy_or_unhealthy_habits/present-simple-daily/56741

Once they finish, we will correct the answers. “Group number one, could you please start reading?” After that, I will add “Is Luci’s lifestyle healthy? What about Pablo’s?” EA: Yes – No. “”

Transition: “Do you believe that Pablo needs some advice?” EA: Yes!

ACTIVITY 4 (18 minutes)

“In groups, write some advice for Pablo.” I will leave these examples on the board.

You should eat more fruits and vegetables.

I suggest you go jogging.

I recommend you drink more water.

Transition: Can you think of another healthy habit? Do you prefer being inside or outside? EA: Inside/outside.

ACTIVITY 5 (35 minutes)

“Spending time outdoors has positive effects. I will give you a text and we are going to read it.” Six volunteers will read the text.

Outdoor Health BenefitsThere are many things you can do to have a healthy life. Many people know that eating healthy food and exercising are two of them. Something else people can do is to spend time outdoors, in nature. Scientists have discovered what most of us already know: being outside has positive effects on human health.

Being outdoors exposes us to sunlight – which aids our production of vitamin D, which helps many parts of the body work properly such as

Page 7: Nievas - Secondary level - Lesson 2

the brain, heart, skin. Vitamin D also helps the body maintain good bone health. But don't spend too much time in the sun as it can burn you.

Spending time outdoors can also help reduce the chance of being overweight. People tend to be inactive inside. Additionally they are more inclined to eat a snack. These two factors can lead to weight gain. But when people are outdoors they do things: they are active. This activity can help control weight.

Another benefit of being outside is the positive effect it can have on personal relationships. When people are outside they tend to do things with people. This can lead to an improved social life, which has been shown to make people happier.

One of the biggest benefits of spending time outdoors is stress reduction. When people spend time in nature, such as at a park, they experience more positive feelings and fewer negative ones. This leads to a decrease in stress, which can lead to better health because stress lowers your body's ability to fight off sickness.

Many people spend long hours at work where they spend most of the day inside. After such a day, spending some time outside will have a calming effect, which can reduce stress. Being out side can also help give you energy if you feel tired. The fresh air can also help increase the amount of oxygen on your body.

So next time you're feeling a little down, head outside. Chances are you'll feel better for it.Source: http://eslreadinglessons.com/outdoor_health_benefits.htm

Once we finish, I will add “Now, you are going to write short sentences for each reason mentioned in the article in groups.” I will provide them with some examples. “Try to find the first reason and look at this example”

Exposing to sunlight is healthy because it aids our production of vitamin D.

We will do the following sentences altogether. “Which is the next reason mentioned in the article?” EA: It reduces our chance of being overweight. “Exaclty! So…” I will write

Being outside is healthy because it reduces our chance of being overweight.

If it is necessary we will write another sentence all together. Once they finish, we will share the answers.

Transition: “Nice work! We are almost on time.”

Page 8: Nievas - Secondary level - Lesson 2

CLOSURE (5 minutes)

“You did a great job today. Do you believe that some of these healthy habits are more difficult to acquire than other ones? Why?” I will let students share their opinion about this question. If they do not participate I will add “For example, being outside. Do you believe that our weather invites us to be outside? What about our schedule?” EA: No, Comodoro is very windy / We spend a lot of time at school.
