Teaching approach: The lesson is delivered under the Communicative approach. Integration of skills: in this lesson plan, students will develop their writing and reading skills through the

different activities. They will be able to read, deduce the main ideas and write their own descriptions of a city. Materials and resources: pictures, texts about the cities, charts, three copies with different texts to complete,

big sheets of paper for the poster. Pedagogical use of ICT in class or at home: I will use the T.V. in order to show them big and colourful pictures

about the different cities. If the T.V. does not work, I will paste the pictures on the board. Seating arrangement: Students will sit in groups of four/five people during the whole lesson (even when they

complete the individual activity). Possible problems / difficulties and their possible solutions during the class: I will paraphrase instructions if any

student does not understand them. I will check that all the students participate in each group. Classroom management strategies: Students will be able to choose their groups for the first activity. If this

does not work, I will ask them to change to another group or work alone. Potential problems students may have with the language: Maybe some students won’t be able to complete

the text but they will work in groups in order to encourage everyone to participate and complete as much as they can.

Assessment: I will ask students individual questions in order to know if they understand the information and the instructions. I will check the texts that they write and correct the mistakes that appear.

WARM-UP (4 minutes)

I will say hello to the students. “Good morning! How are you?” EA: Good morning, fine, thank you!” and I will ask: “Well, this will be our last lesson together and we are finishing the year. Are you waiting for the summer?” EA: Yes / Of course. I will add “Me, too. Last weekend I started planning my vacations. I will show you five cities and I need you to help me to choose one”

Transition: “We are going to watch some pictures on the T.V. and you are going to raise your hand if you know the place or the city.”

ACTIVITY 1 (16 minutes)

I will show the following pictures on the T.V. and I will encourage students to guess the name of the city. “Do you know this city/place?” “What about this one? How did you guess it?” EA: Glaciares/Perito Moreno – Iguazú Falls – Buenos Aires – Bariloche – Puerto Madryn.

After this, I will deliver a copy with the picture of each city and the students will label them. “Now, I will deliver this copy, paste it on your folders and label each picture with the name of the city.”

Transition: “Well done, but in order to choose a place to visit, we need more information about it. Let’s read about these places so you can help me.”

ACTIVITY 2 (30 minutes)

“Now you are going to work in groups of 4/5. I will give you a text about one of these cities and you are going to complete the chart with the main information.”

Puerto Iguazú is a frontier city in the province of Misiones, Argentina. The world-renowned Iguazú Falls are only 18

kilometres away from the city, and as a result the city has developed much of its infrastructure around tourism. Puerto

Iguazú has a Humid Subtropical climate: temperatures are warm in winter and hot in summer. There is no dry season

and rainfall is abundant with every month. Among the most chosen activities, the tourist goes on excursions to Iguazú

National Park visiting 275 waterfalls and getting to know the exotic flora and fauna. In the city, there are different places

to visit such as "Mbororé" and Natural Sciences Museums, Tres Fronteras Boundary Stone and the International

Casino. From Puerto Iguazú, one can go on excursions to Ciudad del Este – Paraguay, where there is an important

Page 4: Nievas - Secondary level - Lesson 4

crafts and electronics fair, as well as on excursions to Brazil in order to get a different view of the falls. Puerto Iguazú is

a place where nature, in its greatest beauty expression, will amaze the tourist for sure.

Puerto Madryn is a city in the province of Chubut in Argentine Patagonia. It is the capital of the Biedma Department,

and has about 93.995 inhabitants. A new shopping mall in the city centre has helped tourism significantly. The climate

is that of a temperate desert zone, with an annual precipitation of between 150 and 200 mm. The annual average

temperature is approximately 14º C. Maximums reach 35º C in the summer and minimum temperatures drop to 5º C in

the winter. On the coastline, Puerto Madryn is bathed by the blue waters. One of the tourist attractions that made this

beautiful city famous all round the world is right whale watching from June to December. Diving Capital of Argentina,

Puerto Madryn summons thousands of fans that come along to dive in for the first time. And its waters are so beautiful

that new followers appear every year. During the summer, the bathing resorts in the City of Puerto Madryn and its

surroundings welcome thousands of visitors.

The Perito Moreno Glacier is a glacier located in the Los Glaciares National Park in southwest Santa Cruz Province,

Argentina. It is one of the most important tourist attractions in the Argentinian Patagonia. The 250 km2 ice formation,

and 30 km in length is the world's third largest reserve of fresh water. The Perito Moreno glacier, located 78 kilometres

from El Calafate, was named after the explorer Francisco Moreno. Due to its size and accessibility, Perito Moreno is

one of the major tourist attractions in southern Patagonia. A large visitor centre at the site features a walking circuit

which allows visitors to view the southern flank and the east facing edge of the glacier. In recent years, trekking tours

on the ice have gained popularity. The two standard tours are a "mini-trekking" option, consisting of a short walk of

about an hour and a half, and a "big ice" version, which is usually about five hours. Tour companies generally

provide crampons to customers.

San Carlos de Bariloche is a city in the province of Río Negro, Argentina, situated in the foothills of the Andes on the

southern shores of Nahuel Huapi Lake. The city emerged in the 1930s and 1940s as a major tourism centre with ski,

trekking and mountaineering facilities. In addition, it has numerous restaurants, cafés, and chocolate shops. The city

has a permanent population of 108,205. The main ski station is the one at Cerro Catedral. During the summer,

beautiful beaches such as Playa Bonita and Villa Tacul welcome sun-bathers; brave lake swimmers venture into its

cold waters, too. The fishing season is another great attraction. Trekking in the mountains, almost completely wild and

uninhabited is also a popular activity. The city is noted for its chocolates and Swiss-style architecture. Bariloche has a

cool Mediterranean climate with dry, windy summers and rainy winters, which grades to an alpine subpolar oceanic

climate at higher altitudes.

Buenos Aires is the capital and largest city of Argentina. It is located on the western shore of the estuary of the Río de

la Plata with a population of around fifteen and a half million. Buenos Aires is a top tourist destination. Visitors have

many options such as going to a tango show, an estancia in the Province of Buenos Aires, or enjoying the

traditional asado. New tourist circuits have recently evolved, devoted to famous Argentines such as Carlos Gardel, Eva

Perónor Jorge Luis Borges. Before 2011, due to the favourable exchange rate, its shopping centres such as Alto

Palermo, Paseo Alcorta, Patio Bullrich, Abasto de Buenos Aires and Galerías Pacífico were frequently visited by

tourists. The city also plays host to musical festivals, some of the largest of which are Quilmes Rock, Creamfields

BA, Ultra Music Festival (Buenos Aires) and the Buenos Aires Jazz Festival.

I will deliver a copy to each student. The students within a group will work with the same city. I will also give them the following chart that they will complete with the information from the text. While they work I will walk among the groups checking that they wrote the correct information and helping them if they miss any activity giving examples as “music festival” or “typical food”.
