HISTORY
Proximity to Dearborn Station attracted many
publishers and printers
A lot of space available after Chicago Fire
Almost all buildings in the area were home to printing
companies in late 1800s and early 1900s
Three biggest printers were M. A. Donohue & Co, R.R.
Donnelly & Sons, and the Franklin Printing Company
HISTORY
In the 1950s, printing companies realized they
needed newer spaces to accommodate the larger
printing machines
That’s when many companies moved out of the
area and Printers Row became deserted

M.A. DONOHUE & CO.
Established in 1861 as Cox and Donohue, Bookbinders
Published book sets (known as “libraries”)
In 1901, the name was changed to M.A. Donohue & Co.
Eventually published only children’s books beginning in early
1900s
1971- company moved out
1979- one of the first buildings to be converted into
residential lofts
DEARBORN STATION
Opened May 8th, 1885
Departure for trains heading West (many celebrities would be
seen waiting outside the station for trains heading to L.A.)
Many immigrants came through this station
Abandoned from 1976 to mid 1980s
Now it has been converted to retail and office space
