Writing Style Lots of elaborate metaphors & similes,

puns, and other figurative language and wordplay.

“primarily used a metrical pattern consisting of lines of unrhymed iambic pentameter, or blank verse, to compose his plays. At the same time, there are passages in all the plays that deviate from this and use forms of poetry or simple prose” (“William”).

Page 11: Rj br intro

Iambic Pentameter 5 pairs of two syllables (feet) One stressed, one unstressed

Page 12: Rj br intro

Sonnet Form Poem Originated in Italy (from sonetto: “little poem”

or “song”) 14 lines (3 quatrains, 1 couplet) Iambic pentameter Specific, strict rhyme scheme:

ABAB CDCD EFEF GG The couplet (last two lines) usually holds the

theme of the sonnet, or a new look at a theme already introduced.

Often used to discuss themes about the conflicts or sadness relating to love.

A COMPLAINT BY NIGHT OF THE LOVER

NOT BELOVED

Alas! so all things now do hold their peace!    Heaven and earth disturbed in no thing

The beasts, the air, the birds their song do cease,    The nightés car the stars about do bring.   car:

chariotCalm is the sea. The waves work less and less:

So am not I, whom love, alas! doth wring,    Bringing before my face the great increase

Of my desires, whereat I weep and sing,    In joy and woe, as in a doubtful case.

For my sweet thoughts sometime do pleasure bring;

But by and by, the cause of my disease    Gives me a pang, that inwardly doth sting,         When that I think what grief it is again,

To live and lack the thing should rid my pain.
