From the School History
The school predecessor was Music Company “Cornelius” in 1926.
The State Music School of Nis was legally founded in 1947 which was
formally accepted as its birthday date.
Music School present-day
• In 2013 School celebrated66th Anniversary.
• School has 96 employees
• 650 attendants/students
•It consists of an Elementary (EМS)and a High Music School (HMS)
• EMS has 6 grades
• HMS has 4 grades
• There are Small and Big School Choirs, School Symphony Orchestra and Music Kindergarten in the school
• EMS also has one dislocated class in the City Municipality of Mediana, Nis

General aim is to get kidsacquainted with all the instruments taught in school,
To help them make their first steps through music art and get the basics of music literacy while playing and
To assess and improve their musical abilities.
The Nis Music School is the only state music school in town
At average 350 pupils attend the EMS
All EMS pupils attend some of regular elementary schoolssimultaniously
Depending on instrument choice, they start EMS at different age (8-12 years of age)
In EMS the lectures and practice are mostly individual except group lectures in 4 general subjects – music theory, solfeggio, choir and orchestration.
HMS is a part of formal secondary school educational system
It gathers 240 attendants divided into 4 grades and 8 classes
There are 89 professors, 32 with general subjects and 57 instrumentalists
All the professors have BA or higher degree earned at domicile Music Art Academies or abroad

There are 30 professors lecturing at the TD
18 are lecturing general music subjects
12 are lecturing other general subjects (literature,
psychology, foreign languages etc.)
All the music professors have finished Nis Music School which
is quite rare example in the country.
Piano Department is among the best in the country
It is also the biggest one in our school
There are 28 piano professors
80% of them are younger then 45 years of age
All the professors have finished their secondary musicaleducation in our school
Piano Dept is one of the most praised in the country and abroadas well
Department has all stringedinstruments represented
There are 11 professors
7 professors of violin
1 professor of viola
2 professors of violoncello
1 professor of contrabass
It‟s comprised of all instruments
except tuba and saxophone
There are 10 professors
2 professors of clarinet
2 professors of flute
2 professors of trumpet

There are two classes at the department
Due to the lack of space we can not respond adequately to the
rising interest in studying this discipline
Today, many of our ex-attendees are resident members of great
opera houses in the country and abroad

There are two young and motivated
professors at each departments. It‟s
interesting to mention that both of our
accordion professors have graduated
at N.A. “P.I.Chaikovsky” in Kiev
In very short period of time they
managed to put their departments on
very high quality level. Having in mind
their youth and eagerness, their
departments are on very solid grounds
We are among the fewest schools in the country with School symphony orchestra
Depending on generation, the orchestra gathers around 50 members at average.
At the republic yearly competition our school orchestra is often the only representative in the category
Every year the orchestra has numerous performances in Nis and surrounding towns
Every year at least three of our pupils join the European Youth Orchestra
Choir is founded in 1969. Its founder, first conductor and spiritus movens was charismatic maestro Radojica Milosavljevic
Choir has won numerous prestigious titles in ex-Yugoslavia and abroad – among others Grand Prix at BBC European Broadcasting
Union Contest ’Let the People Sing’
Choir has travelled and performed all around the world –Yugoslavia, Italy, Spain, Norway, Great Britain...
As an act of tribute to great conductor, school managed to publish the monograph „‟MAESTRO ICA‟‟

Every year our young representatives participate in numerous
competitions and regularly win great number of prices and
recognitions.

Elementary Music Schools Festival (financially supported by the Republic and each year hosted by different town of Serbia).
Also, our young contesters often participate in different music
competitions in Bulgaria, Italy, Czech Republic, France...

The first competition was organized in 1973
In eighties, some music schools from neighbouring towns joined the competition
In 1993 the first “Competition of Young Piano Players of Yugoslavia” was organized in our school
Starting with 1996 the competitions turned into international bienale of young piano players
The members of the jury are distinquished pianists from Serbia, Macedonia, Bulgaria, Bosnia, Rusia, Germany, France, Israel, USA …
Till now more than 3,000 studentsparticipated at the competition
On average the competition agendаis 5 to 7 days long with 200 - 300participants
In March this year we had XIIIInternational Competition ofYoung Piano Players.

To realize the new project “Music, Art, Tourism – Uniting the Balkans” which succeeded the “Cross border music academy” in partnership with Custendil, Bulgaria. Project is co-financed by EU under the CBC-IPA budget line.

Under the actual project “Music, Art, Tourism-uniting the Balkans” an activity called “Beauty of the Balkans” will take place in Nis in April 2014.
Its aim is to promote cross-border touristic exchange and promotion of organizations, institutions and individuals working in the field.
Under the actual project “Music, Art, Tourism-uniting the Balkans” so called “Balkanika Youth Folk Ensemble” will be founded during five days long practice in Nis in March 2014.
Newly founded ensemble will offer few public performances to the Nis spectators and hopefully continue to perform together in the future.

En partenariat avec le Conseil général de la Gironde, France Liberté Gironde et le collège de Monségur.
Octobre 2012 : le directeur et le professeur de musique du collège de Monségur ont rencontré le directeur et les professeurs de l‟école de musique de Nis afin d‟étudier les possibilités de coopération entre les deux écoles
Juin 2013 : les élèves de l‟école de musique de Nis ont effectué un voyage en Gironde où ils ont donné plusieurs concerts avec leurs correspondants français
