FAILURE LEADS TO SUCCESS

“ I have missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I have lost almost 300 games. On 26 occasions I have been entrusted to take the game winning shot, and I missed. I have failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.”

How Does Homework Corrections Affect

Student Achievement?

Page 7: Smsu presentation

WHY DID I CHOOSE THIS PROJECT?

I wanted to see if this was making a difference in the students learning or if I just thought it was helping them when it really wasn’t.

I chose this project because I hope that people learn from their mistakes.

In the past I have given students the opportunity to make corrections on their assignments, quizzes, and tests.

Page 8: Smsu presentation

THE SET UP

- It was discussed how it could improve their overall score for their assignments, as well as prepare students for assessments.

The first day of school:

- Students were given the grading scale for mathematics class.

- It was explained to students how the grading system would work and how choosing to make corrections could help.

GRADE BREAKDOWN

0 - The only way that you will receive a 0 is if you do not turn it in. You will be in at lunch study until the work is complete.

5 - You have enough correct to show me you understand the concept, usually only 1-3 wrong depending on how many total problems are on the page.  You can take the paper home right away. 4 - You understand the concept but missed to many to get a 5.  They can make corrections if they choose to earn up to a 5 if their corrections are right.

3 - Just over 50% of the problems correct.  You can make corrections if you choose to earn up to a 5 if your corrections are right.2 - Just fewer than 50% of the problems correct.  They can make corrections if you choose to earn up to a 5 if your corrections are right.1 - Very few correct if any.  You can make corrections if you choose to earn up to a 5 if your corrections are right.

- Once corrections were made they need to turn it back into the teacher to check for their final grade

THE SET UP- Assignments were given and graded almost daily, and scores were listed on the top of each assignment after the teacher corrected it- Students could choose to make corrections or to accept the score they initially received- Students did not need to make these corrections during class time- To make corrections they could use their book, notes, ask the teacher, or take them home and get help from parents

Page 12: Smsu presentation

THE SET UP

- After the 10-weeks were complete a questionnaire was given to the students

- At the end of each chapter a chapter test was given

- 3 chapter tests were given during the 10-week period

QUESTIONNAIRE RESULTS

Page 23: Smsu presentation

• I didn’t want to do it

Why did you choose not to make any corrections?QUESTIONNAIRE RESULTS

• Because I usually always get fives• I don’t know• Because on every assignment I got a five or a four• Because I get 4s and 5s• Most of the papers I get are good enough I do not need to make corrections• Because got my papers all correct

• Because they’re 3s, 4s, or 5s• I have got 100% on all my papers• Because I do look at my paper and sometimes throw my paper away• Had to much work to do including late work and chores

Page 24: Smsu presentation

Why did you look at the problems you got wrong?QUESTIONNAIRE RESULTS

• Because it helps me understand • Because I want to get some of the answers right• To get more points• So I would get more credit• Because I want an A in math• So I can see what I got wrong then correct them• To know the answer• Because my score is not what I wanted• Get a better grade• So I know what I did wrong• See how many I got wrong• So I could get a higher score if I corrected it• Because I wanted a better grade and a higher score

• I wanted to get a better grade

ISSUES AND THINGS TO CONSIDER

- Students are with multiple other teachers throughout the day so they are not always able to ask me for help on the returned assignments which they did not understand.

- The first five weeks of the 10-week study was with my substitute. She kept very good notes and grades but it is not the same as being in the classroom myself.

- Students who scored 100% on their homework would not need to make corrections and would still score well on the tests. This would make the results of those that did not make corrections inaccurate. - Two new students joined our class part way through.

Page 26: Smsu presentation

IMPLICATIONS FOR MY CLASSROOM – HOW DID THIS CHANGE/WILL CHANGE WHAT HAPPENS IN MY CLASSROOM

- Corrections will continue to be an option in my classroom

- Some students need a constant reminder that corrections are an option

- After discussions at parent/teacher conferences the consensus from parents are they like this as an option for their children to earn back points

Portfolio Artifact

1.3Educators treat students equitably.

Artifact Title:Classroom passes

Explanation of relevance:Students are given these passes at the beginning

of each quarter. If they students need to leave the room for any reason they need to give the

teacher a pass. If they have passes left at the end of the quarter they will receive extra credit.

Standard 1:Educators are committed to students and

their learning.
