SOM 03 Building Kingdom ValuesThis course will discuss how the church, through KOINONA, is the demonstration of the character of the Kingdom of God & how it can begin Building a Small Piece of that Kingdom. This will include understanding & deciding which issues are essential & which are non-essential as we seek to fulfill our mission. It will also begin defining a cell group.

SOM 03-01 Essentials vs Non-Essentials

in necessariis unitasin dubiis libertasin omnibus caritas

In essentials, unity; in non-essentials, liberty; in all things, charity. Rupertus Meldenius.

How important is it to you?Gaano ka halaga sa iyo?I often tell people that there are some things that I believe that I would die for; there are some things that I believe that I would lose an arm for; there are some things that I believe that I would lose a finger for; & then there are some things that I believethat I would not evenget a manicure for. -C. Michael Patton

How important is it to you? Michael Patton

The 2 Views in the ChurchBounded-Set ApproachThe evangeliser is the expert who has special knowledge regarding God that the lost person must take in to be saved. Centered-Set ApproachEach person is the expert on his or her own life, & has to God-given ability to seek for the truth. The evangeliser respects this.

The 2 Views in the ChurchBounded-Set ApproachThe lost person is viewed as flawed in character & sinful. Centered-Set ApproachEach person is viewed as created in the image of God precious, valuable, & loved by God.Ang bawat tao ay nilarawan na nilikha sa kawangis ng Diyos mahalaga at minamahal ng Diyos.

The 2 Views in the ChurchBounded-Set ApproachSeeing people as simply lost or saved, it tries to paternally fix up sinners & make them like us.Dahil sa ang tingin mo sa mga tao ay mga naghahanap sa katotohanan, susubukin nitong aarugain at gawin silang katulad natin.Centered-Set ApproachSeeing people as seekers, it tries to stimulate others to ask, seek, & knock, while understanding we dont know it all ourselves.

The 2 Views in the ChurchBounded-Set ApproachThe goal is to get them to sign on, to profess belief, to become part of our team. Centered-Set ApproachThe goal is for the process of discovery of Christ & the search for truth to be furthered in the person.

The 2 Views in the ChurchBounded-Set ApproachA cataclysmic change occurs in people called conversion. Centered-Set ApproachConversion is a process that does not begin & end w/ accepting Christ but begins w/ the HSs prevenient grace on the persons life & continues thru repentance for a lifetime.

The 2 Views in the ChurchBounded-Set ApproachWe Christians know & have the whole truthTayong mga Kristiyano ang may alam at nakakaalam ng buong katotohanan.Centered-Set ApproachWe dont know everything about life or God humility & wonder remain.

PaalalaIf our non-essentials are more fuzzy, it will be easier for people to come near to our essentials!

Core Beliefs

Core BeliefsIto ang mga Essential sa ating ministry, beliefThe task of wrestling with the problem is an ongoing process of discernment, not a simple matter of logical deduction. Centered-set communities must commit to truth as a way of life in order to lessen the problems that come from self-ignorance & self-deception in the search for the common center. This process of discernment should be a community process where each member of the community commits to stay in community. The community discernment process should be Bible-based because Scripture is the most reliable witness we have to the character of Jesus.Adapted from Ryan McAnally-Linz: The Problem of the Contested Center

Ryan McAnally-Linz: The Problem of the Contested CenterIn response to the problem of the contested center, I offer several counsels for churches that think in the terms of centered-set ecclesiology. First, the task of wrestling with the problem is an ongoing process of discernment, not a simple matter of logical deduction. Second, centered-set communities must seek to foster truthfulness as a way of life in order to mitigate the problems that arise from self-ignorance & self-deception in the pursuit of the common center. Third, this process of discernment should be a community process in which a prima facie commitment to remain in community in spite of disagreement is the rule. Fourth & finally, the community discernment process should return repeatedly to the foundational stories of its faith because Scripture is the most reliable witness we have to the character of the person who we want to make the center of our life together.

Whoever wants to become great among you will be your servant. Whoever wants to be most important among you will be a slave for everyone. It's the same way with the Son of Man. He didn't come so that others could serve him. He came to serve & to give his life as a ransom for many people. Mk 10:43-45Jesus got up from the table, removed his outer clothes, took a towel, & tied it around his waist. Then he poured water into a basin & began to wash the disciples' feet & dry them with the towel that he had tied around his waist Jo 13:4-5
