What is Conflict?

Conflict is dynamics between persons, groups, or nations who perceive another as a threat to their interests or needs.

The Nature of conflictConflicts inflict so much pain and

negative emotions on those involved. Reasoning is often clouded and miscommunications occur especially at the height of an emotional argument when words are exchanged to inflict harm on the other.

Conflict cycle involves “triggering events” which is perceived as a threat by another person.

Conflict StagesAccording to the United Nations

Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) Publication on Conflict Negotiation Skills for Youth (2003). Three four stages of conflict that may happen simultaneously these are the following:

1. Intrapersonal- with one self2. Interpersonal- among two or more

individuals3. Intergroup- within the same group4. Intergroup- between two or more groups

There are two responses to conflict these are the following;

A. FlightIn flight there are three modes of behavior may occur:

a. Avoidance-to evade or dodge the cause of the strong emotions.

b. Ignoring-you disregard and snub his presence

c. Denying-when someone asks you if you are quarrelling or in disagreement with the person you are in conflict and you disagree or repute the comment.

B.Fight - is a physiological reaction that occurs in response to a perceived harmful event, attack or threat to survival

Conflicts may arise some due to these following (Myers 2013)Perceiving threats to own needs and

interestsMiscommunication between partiesExhibiting behaviors that are destructive to

another person’s well-being or reputationPerceiving unjust treatment caused by

another person or entityDisagreement over the interpretation of

facts or information

Positive Effects of ConflictsNot all conflicts result negative effect, it

has also positive effects and these are the following of some positive result of conflicts;Allows for issues to surfaceRaises the awareness of both persons needsAllows emotions to be expressedUnderstand and accept the uniqueness and

differences of other peopleStrengthens the resolve of the parties to pursue

common goalsAnd encourages dialogue and empowerment

(Crawley and Graham2002).
