Settlement size, pattern and structure as a function
of socio‐cultural factors
SETTLEMENT SIZE refers to the
total population or number of dwellings within a
contiguous built-up area. Larger settlements provide an opportunity for greater self-
containment and a mix of uses offering access to a range of shops, services and employment within the built-up area, thereby
reducing the need for inter-urban travel.
WHAT IS SETTLEMENT ??A settlement is a place where people live.
A settlement could be anything from an isolated farmhouse to a mega city (settlement with over 10 million people).
Settlements can either be temporary or permanent. Temporary settlements include things such as refugee camps.
Some temporary settlements have become permanent over time, (the largest in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil).
The reason why a settlement developed in the first place is said to be its function.
A settlement pattern means the shape of a settlement. The shape of early settlements
was usually influenced by the surrounding landscape
SETTLEMENT PATTERN
LinearIn a linear settlement pattern, the buildings are arranged in lines. These lines often follow the route of a road or body of water. Linear settlements tend to develop because of the convenience of proximity with a transport route.
Settlement pattern !!!
In a dispersed settlement pattern, the buildings are scattered over a wide area. Dispersed settlement patterns are often associated with agricultural activity and are frequently surrounded by farmland.
Dispersed NucleatedThe buildings are grouped around a central core. In England, this core is often a church. These settlement patterns are usually associated with patterns of agriculture in which the settlement is surrounded by two or three fields, and each field divided into strips that were farmed by individual farmers.

These include aspects like caste, community, ethnicity and religion. In India it is commonly found that the main land owning caste resides at the center of the village and the
other service providing castes on the periphery. This leads to social segregation and fragmentation of a settlement
into several units.
Ethnic and Cultural Factors
Structure of Population
Influence of socio-cultural factors in development of a
settlement
Society is always the main constituent of any settlement. The social behavior of men is responsible for the overall
evolution of mankind.
Cultural Factors
Influence of socio-cultural factors in development of a
settlement
Culture has always been the highlight of any community or civil unit. For the proper development of society,
cultural upliftment is equally necessary.
FESTIVALS
Influence of socio-cultural factors in development of a
settlement
People celebrate Festivals and important dates, like Diwali and Holi, two common fests in India, and gather
around and to socially interact with each other.
