TEEN TALWAARThis impressive monument can be found in the area of Clifton.Karachi has many landmarks, but the Teen Talwar really stands-out. The three white marble swords symbolize (and are inscribed with the dogma of Pakistan's founder, Mohammad Ali Jinnah) Unity, Faith and Discipline. ("ittehad, yaqeen-e-muhkam, tanzeem.") This lovely tribute was commissioned by the former President & Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto (Quaid-e-Awam). The abundance of white, good-quality marble in the city's vicinity has apparently encouraged its wide use for the creation of many monuments, lending a symbolic nature of grandeur & purity.

NOTE: If you're hoping for a picture of yourself standing in front of this monument, it's not possible: the 3 swords are located in the middle of a very busy roundabout (also known as Teen Talwar Intersection near St Andrew's Church). So clicking a few pictures from a distance whilst you're waiting in traffic is the best option.ALSO, note that many beggars have made this busy roundabout their home and will incessantly knock at your car window. To me it is questionable whether the hundreds of thousands of commuters, workers, delivery drivers & beggars passing-by here every day are still inspired by this declaration of patriotism; I'm sure it looks more impressive to an outsider like myself. This considered, does New York's Statue of Liberty and its values still mean as much to Americans as it does to awe-struck foreign travellers? Do we take our own history for granted? Food for thought...

EMPRESS MARKET SADDARThe Empress Market (Urdu:  is a (ايمپريسمارڪيٽ :Sindhi ,ایمپریسمارکیٹ famous marketplace situated in the Saddar Town locality of Karachi, Pakistan. The market traces its origins to the British Raj era, when it was first constructed.[1]Today, it is amongst the most popular and busy places for shopping in Karachi and reflects as one of the few historical spots of the city. Commodities sold in the Empress Market range from condiments, fruit, vegetables and meat to stationary material, textiles and pet shops. The Empress Market was constructed between 1884 and 1889 and was named to commemorate Queen Victoria,Empress of India. The market was constructed at a well-chosen site that was clearly visible from a great distance. The site of the market had historical significance as it was situated on the grounds where a number of native sepoyswere executed in a ruthless fashion after the Indian Rising of 1857 (The Ghaddar). Accounts mention that the sepoys had their heads blown off by cannonballs in an attempt to suppress any mutinous feelings among the locals. The foundation stone of the Empress Market was laid by the-then Governor of Bombay, James Ferguson in 1884, who also laid the foundation of the Merewether Memorial Tower. It was designed by James Strachan, the foundations were completed by the English firm of A.J. Attfield, and the building was constructed by the local firm of ‘Mahoomed Niwan and Dulloo Khejoo’. The building was arranged around a courtyard, 130 ft by 100 ft, with four galleries each 46 ft wide. The galleries provided accommodation for 280 shops and stall keepers; at the time of its construction it was one of only seven markets in Karachi.[2] a recreational park also exists nearby. In 2011, a fire of unknown cause destroyed at least 46 and damaged 62 shops in the market near Jahangir Park, causing potentially billions of Rupees in damage to traders.[3]

SEA VIEW CLIFTON KARACHIKarachi started as a small fishing village called Mai KOLACHI. With the annexation of Sindhh by the British in 1843 it changed into a town. Its naturally protected harbour and moderate climate made it a summer resort for Sindhh. It was reputed to be the cleanest city of the sub-continent till 1947 with a population of 200,000. Karachi was transformed into an unmanageably big city with the establishment of Pakistan. It was the first capital of the federation from 1947 to 1960 before Islamabad was built. Being a port city millions of refugees from all over India streamed in here and gave it an unprecedented vitality and multicultural dimension. Today, its population exceeds 13 million. The main attractions of Karachi are the sea, the shopping and some fine specimen of Victorian architecture and modern buildings and international cuisine.
