• Independent Mediators• no vested interest in dispute, not
connected to parties, neutral
• Authoritative Mediators• usually connected in some way, but more
powerful than the parties, with a vested interest in the outcome - supervisor/boss

Two Basic Ideologies?
• Individualistic Ideology• Sees the world as being made up of separate beings with
equal worth but different needs, human nature is to seek satisfaction of needs and desires through negotiation or self-help
• Relational Ideology• Sees the world as being made up of people with
diverse needs, desires and cultures who possess a common form of consciousness connecting them to each other via shared understandings
