Introduction

• First stage in Transportation Planning is to

collect data related to:

• Land use and socio-economic Surveys

• Existing Transport Facilities Surveys

• Travel Pattern Surveys

• Transport planning surveys can be time

consuming and costly.

• Therefore, there are guidelines and

standardized procedures for transportation

survey methods.

Study Area

• In order to perform transport surveys, the study

area is first defined.

• Transportation Planning can be at the international

level, regional level, or urban level.

• Study area should include the existing and potential

built-up areas of the city.

Cordon Line

• Bound all areas, already built up and likely to be

developed during the study period.

• Contain all areas of systematic daily life of people

oriented toward the city center.

• Continuous and uniform, so movements cross it

only once.

• Compatible with previous studies.

Zoning

• Established mainly based on land use.

• Should have a homogenous land use to accurately

reflect trip making behavior.

• Anticipated change in land use should be considered

when subdividing the study area into zones.

• Should not be too large or too small.

• Have regular geometry to determine the centroid easily.

• Compatible with screen lines and cordon lines.

• Natural or physical boundaries (canals, rivers, railroads,

etc. can form zone boundaries.

To determine the extent to which the present highway

system is adequate and to plan for new facilities.

To assess the adequacy of parking facilities and to plan
