History The hydraulic ram is a very old and well

proven, technology for lifting water In 1772, English man Johan Whitehurst

invented manually operated precursor of the hydraulic ram called the (pulsation engine)the 1st one he install in 1775 rise water to a high of 16 ft ( 4.9 m)

The 1st self acting ram pump invented by the (French man Joseph Michel Montgolfier in 1796 for raising water in his paper mill

IntroductionThe basic principle behind the ram pump is to

use large amount of water falling a short distance to pump a small amount of water to higher elevation

Typically only 2% to 20% of the water flowing through a ram pump system will actually deliver to storage tank the remainder is over flow and direct in to the steam

DefinitionIn ram flow comes with high quantity and low

head. In ram output is low quantity high pressure liquid transmit to high head.

Common Operation ProblemIf pressure vessel is removed then high stress

will generate and disturb the ram.Air dissolve in liquid will generate stress.Less quantity of air will disturb efficiency.Improper setting of waste valve will decrease

required pressure.Attempting to generate pressure more then

ram capacity.

Solution of problemRepairingWelding in case of failure parts replacement

Page 11: Hydraulic ram

AdvantagesNo electricity or external power source.Less moving parts so less wear rate.Continual operation.Easy to maintain.Long life. Reliable.

Page 12: Hydraulic ram

DisadvantagesOnly suitable for certain sites.Waste a lot of water.Only 10% of water is consumed.May need to address sedimentation issues.

Design featureDelivery pipe is 5-12 times higher then source

of ram and the vertical distance between source and pump.

Ram pump efficiency 60%- 80%.Drive pipe is straight strong and rigid.

ApplicationTo lift drinking water from spring to high

ground settlement.Use where flowing water is available.

Characteristics of a hydraulic ram pump:-There is no other external energy input (e.g. human ,

animal fossil fuel etc) that makes the ram work other than the energy of water passing through the pump.

Its operation will continue 24 hours a day a week so long as the required volume of water continues to flow through it.

Water has to come from a location higher than the ram.Only a small portion of this water (around 25% or less) is

pumped up, the remainder passing out of the ram and must be drained to a lower location.

Due to the rams small output per minute there is need of storage device at the point of delivery to accumulate this output on a 24 hours bases..
