Women Composer’s in AmericaLaura Wainwright Thompson
Heels and Musical Speels • Women have written music for
centuries in history. Amy Beach and Taylor Swift are activists for women with their music. One hundred twenty-two years separate the miles and years between Amy and Taylor but both women did and do a great service for representing women in what was considered a man’s world and is severly dominated still by men; the world of composing music.
• Amy chose to write symphony music when it was unheard of for women to get published and the men composers of the time gave her grudging respect because her technique and exicution were flawless.
Heels and Musical Speels Continued
• Amy Beach grew up in the time when women were in the struggle for rights to vote and have a say in how thier lives would go. She wrote music about immigrant’s who were under-represented such as the Irish and African American people. Her writing of musical compositions was met with resistance because women simply did not get noticed for their accomplishments like men did. In this time each woman was the property of thier father and when they married they were thier husbands property.
Amy BeachBorn in 1867 Amy was influenced musically by her mother and being from a more wealthy family she was expected to better herself by practicing the arts.

Swiftism
• "One thing I do believe as a feminist is that in order for us to have gender equality, we have to stop making it a girl fight, and we have to stop being so interested in seeing girls trying to tear each other down. It has to be more about cheering each other on as women.“
• Taylor empowers women and men to build each other up instead of tear each other down.
