THE MAD COW CONTROVERSY The controversy happened because of statements made by Oprah and

Howard Lyman during the episode of “OPRAH WINFREY SHOW’’ telecast on April 16,1996.

Oprah had allowed a discussion between Howard Lyman (executive director, humane society of the US), Gary Weber (representative , National cattlemen’s beef association),Dr. will Hueston(Representative, United States Department of Agriculture).

The show based on the theme ‘’dangerous food’’ talked about the MAD COW disease.

Page 14: OPRAH GAIL WINFREY

WHAT IS MAD COW DISEASE

The scientific name of mad cow is BOVINE SPONGIFORM ENCEPHALOPHY [B.S.E]. It is a nervous system disorder .

Page 15: OPRAH GAIL WINFREY

It affects a cow nervous system , causing a cow to act strangely and lose control of its ability to do normal things ,such as walk . An infected cow would act mad which some times means mentally ill.

According to medical analysts, the disease happens due to the cattle ranchers, feeding cows with rendered livestock.

On the show, Lyman blamed the practice of feeding rendered livestock (protein derived from cattle remains) to cattle for outbreak of the disease in Europe, which resulted in the death of over 1.5 million cattle and 20 people in 1996.

Page 16: OPRAH GAIL WINFREY

SUIT AGAINST OPRAH In May 1996, some cattle producers filed a

$10.3 million suit against Oprah and Lyman, in the Texas state court, under the Texas False Disparagement of Perishable Food Products Act.

David Mullin ; said, "The message of the show was never meant to be where opinions are shared. The show was meant to be scary.

The cattle producers claimed that Oprah knowingly aired false and defamatory comments about the threat of mad cow disease in the US.

Page 17: OPRAH GAIL WINFREY

The show reportedly had a devastating impact on cattle prices and sales in the US.

Chip Babcock, Oprah's attorney, claimed that the show in question was fair and did not suggest that beef was unsafe.

Oprah soon aired a second show on the 'Mad Cow Disease,' with cattle industry representatives on the discussion panel to arrive at a balanced perspective on the issue.

Page 18: OPRAH GAIL WINFREY

Bill O'Brien , said "I do not think it repaired the damage. She did not go on the program and eat a hamburger before the world.

In February 2000, a federal court dismissed the suit against Oprah stating that though Oprah's show melodramatized the issue, it did not give false information to defame cattle producers.

The issue attracted media attention all over the world, highlighting Oprah's immense popularity and influence over her viewers.

OPRAH – THE ENTREPRENUER Oprah she was owner of a huge business empire, but

she don’t know how to read balance sheet and she did not follow any corporate models.

Oprah was once reported to have hoarded $50 million in cash, which she called her personal bag-lady fund,& as she was afraid of investing in the stock market, being totally ignorant about it.

Harpo Productions Is started in October 1988,Harpo Productions acquired the ownership and production rights of The Oprah Winfrey Show & from ABC

Page 20: OPRAH GAIL WINFREY

The Harpo empire, however did not function purely on Oprah& personal skills. She had put in place a team that dedicatedly worked towards keeping the business running. Dennis Swanson and Jeff Jacobs (Jeff) President, Harpo Group, contributed greatly to Oprah & success as a talk show host as well as a businesswoman over the years.

Harpo partners (ABC, Hearst, Oxygen) are distributors. The business decisions were based largely on trust (she referred to this as taking & leaps of faith & It was reported that she asked only one question before she made a decision – Can I trust you? & Commenting on this, Nancy Peters man, Executive Vice President, Allen & Co (Investment Banking Firm), said & quit It is all about character with Oprah.

Building on Success The Oprah Winfrey Show was launched in 1986 and

was syndicated nationally. It was placed on 120 channels and reached an audience of 10 Million people, grossing $125 Million in its first year with Oprah’s share being an estimated $30 Million.

She shortly acquired ownership of the program from ABC, placing it under the control of her recently formed production company, Harpo Productions .This allowed Winfrey to make more money for the national syndication.

Page 22: OPRAH GAIL WINFREY

The Oprah Winfrey NetworkOprah announced, in 2009, that she would be bringing her program to an end when contract with ABC ended in 2011. She then moved to her own network the Oprah Winfrey Network, which was a joint venture with Discovery Communications. Even though the network made a questionable start financially, it made headlines in the early part of 2013 when it aired an interview that Oprah conducted with Lance Armstrong, the seven time Tour de France winner who had admitted to the use of performance enhancing drug use throughout his career.

Oprah’s Serving To Society Oprah donated at least 10% of her annual earning to

charity during her adult life. According to an article published in April 2002, Oprah

had became an icon of ‘Church-free spirituality and spiritual guru’ to her over 22 million devoted viewers.

Winfrey invested $40million and some of her time establishing the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for girls in Henley on Klip.

Oprah asked her people to help the “less fortunate” by donating the spare change to the angel network.

Page 26: OPRAH GAIL WINFREY

Other side of OPRAH Difficult childhood. Critics/discriminations. Abused. Other controversies (such as the one surrounding

the mad cow disease issue added to the Oprah's negative publicity).

Page 27: OPRAH GAIL WINFREY

How Oprah defended against her problems.

Avoiding negative media influence and not letting criticism get to you can seem difficult at times, but there are many ways to avoid letting them affect you life, such as:

Taking criticism in your stride. Learn not to take it personally; and Don’t let the media criticism dictate what to

think about celebrities, or yourself and your personal situation.

When reading criticism of other women in the media, remember the journalist or their brand might have an ‘agenda’.

Mass media will often look for the critical story rather than the supportive story. Don’t buy into it.
