What is the Sadist?

A sadist receives gratification by causing pain to another.

They enjoy being cruel. They are extremely violent and

psychologically brutal. The sadist does not feel remorse.

GREEK CULTURE

Persephone and Hades

The sadist character in this story is Hades.

He kidnaps Persephone, daughter of Demeter, because he falls in love with her.

He traps her in the Underworld with him, and she is only allowed to visit her mother a few months out of the year.

He does not care that Persephone is miserable with him.

Because of Hades’ cruelty and the fact that he does not care about the pain he inflicts on Persephone, is considered the sadist of the story.

Ares: Greek god of war

Ares is another god found in various mythological stories who is a sadist

He is extremely violent, and he is very destructive in battle

Ares was dangerous and had savage-like qualities

ROMAN CULTURE

Nero

Nero was a very famous emperor who was known for the persecution of Christians

He is classified as a sadist because he loved watching people suffer

He showed no sympathy whatsoever, and he was genuinely evil

Gladiator

The character Commodus in the movie, Gladiator, was a sadistic character

He killed his own father and Maximus who was supposed to be the next emperor of Rome

Commodus only cared about power, and that is why he killed so many innocent people

Aladdin

The character, Jafar, from the movie Aladdin is also considered a sadist

He manipulated the king in order to gain power

He did anything to anyone just to become more powerful

AMERICAN CULTURE

The Little Mermaid

Ursula in The Little Mermaid is a sadistic character

She tries to ruin Ariel’s hopes of becoming human

Ursula becomes so obsessed with killing Ariel’s dreams that it is the only thing that matters

BRITISH CULTURE

Lord of the Flies

The sadist in Lord of the Flies is Jack

He becomes so possessed with killing and power that he will murder two boys just to become chief

He truly becomes a savage

Sweeney Todd

In the play/movie, Sweeney Todd, Benjamin Barker is the sadist

He kills so many men for no good reason

His goal was to obtain his daughter from the cruel judge by murdering him

He is a true sadist because of his enjoyment of his victims’ pain
