EU Standards
Problems:
• Mad Cow Disease in England 1990.
• PCB in Belgium 1995
• Enforcement challenge with 27 member states.
US Standards
• Precautionary Approach (HACCP based) required by 2010 FSMA
• Standards will be on par with EU Standards when FSMA fully implemented.
• DWPE and other standards becoming more strictly enforced since 2010 FSMA
• Demanding standard for pesticide residues in produce and for drug residue in seafood.
Chinese Standards
• 2009 – 1st Comprehensive Food Safety Law • Assign responsibility to many agencies.• High standard since 2009 but local enforcement in
consistent• Problems: Melamine, pesticides, drug residues in pork and
seafood, etc.• However standard is improving and exported products now
in general have high standards.

Conclusion
• USA and EU have a similar level of food safety standards
• USA Food Safety Standard is becoming more strict due to the Food Safety Modernization Act.
• Lower level in China and other developing countries but improving.
