Overview of the CMV workshop concept▪Conceptualised in 2015 to deliver improved coverage

(quantity and quality) on the AMV in member states▪Sharp focus on ‘domesticating’ the Africa Mining Vision

at country level▪Focussed on reaching out to member states who were

already rolling out the Country Mining Vision or had expressed interest▪Focussing on advocacy and communications

workstream: an opportunity to connect the AMDC and implementing countries to introduce the AMV and CMV▪Co-designed to respond to the host government’s needs

and areas of interest in AMV implementation

Page 5: Amdc giz presentation

Objectives of the workshops

1. To raise awareness and improve understanding of the contents and objectives of the African Mining Vision and the Country Mining Vision (or local mining policy), and link them to the potential benefits for the host country

2. To explain AMDC’s role in these initiatives and share information on AMDC’s work and contribution

3. To support more informed and holistic reporting and communication around mineral policy, legislation and regulations in the host country through practical sharing of knowledge, skills and technologies

•

The focus on communication practitioners▪Recognised that – to date - knowledge of the AMV and

CMV has been limited to a handful of politicians and law makers: information needed to be made accessible to a broader audience▪Therefore targetted communication practitioners in:

▪Government▪Civil Society▪Universities and think tanks▪Private sector companies▪Local media▪UN agencies at country level

Page 7: Amdc giz presentation

Original implementation plan: Jan - Sept 2016• Support in-country consultation and implementation

workshops on the communication guidelines in countries already engaged in CMV processes, namely Tanzania, Ghana, Lesotho, Mozambique, Kenya, and Guinea Conakry.

• Provide assistance in the implementation of AMV communication guidelines in emerging and upcoming CMV processes in Sierra Leone, Namibia, Uganda, Ethiopia, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Malawi, and assisting in organizing media workshops in the above-mentioned countries.

GIZ support for this project

GIZ has kindly provided the following support to this project:▪Funding for the workshops▪Offer of logistical support from GIZ offices in target

countries▪110 days of mining comms consultant to provide

support: Jan – Sept 2016

Page 9: Amdc giz presentation

Progress to date: Lesotho March 2016

▪ Workshop 1 successfully held in Lesotho in March 2016▪Approximately 40

participants with equitable gender split▪Good mix of

government, media, universities, civil society and think tanks▪Very positive feedback

Page 10: Amdc giz presentation

Progress to date: Malawi and others▪ Workshop 2 scheduled for Malawi from 31 May – 2 June

2016▪Expressions of interest and formal approaches from a

number of CMV-implementing countries:▪Sierra Leone▪Ghana▪Guinea (Conakry)▪Zambia

Page 11: Amdc giz presentation

Lessons learned to dateWorkshop implementation has been slower than initially envisaged:I. A country’s political and diplomatic

protocols and processes can be complex and intricate to navigate, taking into account all partners’ needs and focus areas

II. Coordination between various AMDC in-country activities and engagements requires finesse and careful timing

III. Logistical and financial arrangements require very long lead times within UN structures

IV. Workshops are resource-intensive for internal AMDC staff

Page 12: Amdc giz presentation

Next steps and opportunities for refinement▪Adjust implementation timeline to

take into account political, logistical and resourcing complexity

▪Appetite from implementing countries is significant (Guinea Conakry, Zambia, Kenya, Ghana etc) and could perhaps be harnessed in a central workshop
