HSAD Objectives

To assist the Ministry of Agriculture identify and address constraints to the greater competitiveness of selected agricultural/agribusiness value chains

To generate higher incomes for smallholder farmers and increase profitability of agribusinesses

To strengthen and modernize Iraq’s Agricultural Extension Service

To promote sustainable management of natural resources

17,400 MT of certified (commercial) seed produced (more than 100,000 ha will be served next season)

3,147 MT wheat seed processed and upgraded using mobile seed cleaners

Variety evaluation trials on 270 durum and bread wheat genotypes provided by ICARDA and on 216 genotypes provided by the National Agricultural Research System

Demonstration of new wheat varieties to farmers in 12 different locations

97 officials and 315 farmers trained on the operations of Mobile Seed Processing Units

Staff trained and 11 seed processing plants evaluated

Improved capacity of 316 MoA1 and MoAWR2 staff on Seed Production and Certification and processing

Purchase of seed lab equipment (5 sets) to strengthen quality seed capacity of the MoAWR

Purchase of 4 plot seeders to strengthen the variety development and breeder seed production programs

Demonstrated control of Dubas bug and Lesser date moth in four locations (Basra, Karbala, Anbar, Meysan, Babel, Baghdad)

Trained 277 between staff and farmers on IPM for date palm and 35 extension agents on the production & use of organic fertilizers for crop and environment management

Tested/validated solar light traps as most economical and effective control for date palm borers

Purchased 30 solar light traps for farmers 321 farmers over 504 ha directly

benefitted from and accepted the IPM technology

16 MoA staff sent to India to be trained on bio-fertilizers and bio-pesticides in agriculture, mass rearing for IPM and bio-organic fertilization in agriculture

Survey and rehabilitation of the tissue culture facility in Basra

Trained Baghdad and Basra lab staff on micro-propagation protocol for date palm as per international standards

Help set up links between the public labs and the private sector

Follow-up and guidance on increasing production efficiency and trouble shooting

Four conventional seeders converted to ZT seeders, tested and delivered; Six ZT seeders purchased

23 MoAWR staff trained on CA principles and applications;

22 farmers trained on CA via on-farm demonstrations

Machinery survey carried out in the IKR with analysis and recommendations for the future development of CA activities

Complete assessment of two sites for water harvesting hill lakes and tender documents delivered

30 trainees trained on rainwater management in Erbil

Assistance to the MoA in finalizing the Seed Law Implementing Regulations

Delivered study on the Iraqi wheat seed policy

Baseline surveys - data collection and analysis on wheat and date palm value chains

Developed the Iraq Spatial, a geo-spatial “one-stop” resource to inform policies on food security and nutrition

Developed the Iraq Social Accounting Matrix
