Narendra Modi

• Born to a family of grocers belonging to the oil-presser

community.

• At the age of eight, Modi came in contact with

RSS and later he was given charge of Sangh's student

wing.

• Modi has a large challenge to start with: a messy

economy. In a leftist country like India, Modi may start

out moderately but may become more radical as he

shows signs of political capital to change the

country. His success will depend largely on picking the

right players for his team, especially the right finance

minister.

Margaret Thatcher

• Margaret Thatcher’s father, a shopkeeper.

• Roberts became President of the Oxford University Conservative Association in 1946. She was influenced at university by political works such as Friedrich von Hayek's The Road to Serfdom(1944)

• Her first 2 years in office were not easy -unemployment was very high, but the economy gradually showed improvement. She brought more of her supporters into the Cabinet

Like Great Britain’s Margaret Thatcher, Modi is attempting to use economic messaging about decentralization, small government, and development to restore India’s economic standing and to court foreign investment.

Page 44: Narendra Modi

Ronald Reagan

• He was the 40th President of the United States (1981–89), and served as the 33rd Governor of California (1967–75) prior to his presidency. He was re-elected in a landslide in 1984, proclaiming that it was "Morning in America".

• Reagan was big on defense. So is Modi. His latest budget opened the market to allow for 49% foreign ownership of Indian defense contractors.

• Reagan’s other trait, cutting bureaucracy, “trickled down” to Modi from across the seas. Modi has been streamlining government since he stepped into office, reducing government positions in hopes to reduce waste and the amount of time it takes to approve large infrastructure projects. India needs that.

Page 45: Narendra Modi

Deng Xiaoping

• Chinese communist leader, who was the most powerful figure in the People’s Republic of China from the late 1970s until his death in 1997. Became a leading political and military organizer in the Jiangxi Soviet, an autonomous communist enclave in southwestern China that had been established by Mao Zedong

• My Deng Xiaoping analogy is based on three or four reasons. Firstly, Modi represents a decisive break from dynasty rule like Deng Xiaoping broke with the madness of Mao Zedong ideology. Other two things that make me to think further on this are Modi’s decisiveness, pragmatic approach and the obsession to get things done like the Chinese reformist leader. Also, what strikes me as a parallel between the two is the kind of long-term horizon for their countries. Of course, the other parallel is that both of them have baggage.
