Internet interconnection: Peering
● 99% of internet interconnections are based on settlement-free peering: no contracts, no commercials, mutually beneficial relationships - just lay a fiber between two routers
● Highly efficient economics which contributed to the growth & success of the Internet
● Essential to keeping traffic & content local, to bring cost, performance and usage benefits. See ISOC, 2015

Peering & Internet eXchange Points (IXPs)
● IXPs are a (very) useful tool for peering, but not the only way. Private network interconnect (PNI - “private peering”) works fine in many cases
● A successful IXP:○ Is a symptom of a healthy & competitive market more than an enabler○ is bottom-up rather than top-down○ Can be private or associative, not necessarily government sponsored○ Works best with local content, GGC or otherwise
● Success stories: NAPAfrica, TIX, GIX, IXPN, UIXP… And plenty more coming

Google Global Cache
Peering pop
● Lightweight platform caching Google static content (videos, apps)
● Saves ISPs up to 60% of their Google traffic & improves user experience
● Deployed worldwide, with individual ISPs or IXPs
● Africa in progress with many success stories
● Development of Internet exchanges (IXPs) fuels growth in some countries

Google Global Cache (GGC) checklist
Google Global Cache (GGC) available (almost) worldwide: Save up to 60% of your international transit to Google AS15169, by hosting content locally - subject to traffic requirements: https://peering.google.com/iwantggc/
Share GGC servers:- Do you peer or is an IXP up and running in your country?- Can you provide rackspace (6U), layer 3 routing, a /26 and power
(3x400W max)?- Are you able to provide internet bandwidth (xxx Mbps) to the GGC?
Needs a sponsor or sharing agreement between IX members.
