While conventional treatment proticols have recommended no treatment for curves under 25, newer reseach* suggests starting conservative treatment at around 20. A study in the Journal of Neurosurgery Pediatrics January 2011 related to scoliosis reported the need for lowering the threshold for brace treatment in scoliosis curves from 25 degrees to 20 degrees, regardless of age or curvature location.

My doctor didnt tell us the degree of the scoliosis, so how do you know what the curvature measures?

Answer:

Measure the Cobb Angle. Its not as difficult as you may think and its very important that its measured accurately.

When patients come into my office and bring prior X-rays I always make sure to measure the curves myself, even if the films had been previously read by a radiologist or another physician.

Radiologist often will eyeball the degree of curvature, which means they guessed at it. This guess can often be inaccurate. Since the degree of the Cobb Angle is such an important piece in determining what type of care is needed, if any, I always like to do it myself.

Cobb Angle is the measureof the degree of betweenthe two most tilted vertebrain a scoliosis curve.

3722Often there will be more than one curve that will require measurement. These measurements will be compared with future X-rays to see if the scoliosis is getting better, worse or staying the same.

The problem with that is taking too many serial X-rays of the spine has the potentially of being harmful to your child, especially when they are still growing. So obviously its important to minimize their exposure during this critical time.

Fortunately there are other ways to measure a scoliosis to see if its getting better or worse so that you can significantly reduce the number of x-rays that are taken during the course of your childs scoliosis care.

The other important feature of a scoliosis is the rotational component, which is indicated by the green arrows.

Rotation is not well visualized on x-rays because an x-ray is a 2 dimensional view of a 3 dimensional person. So it, best touse other tools.Width
