Corners of the mouth

A. MaxillaIn the maxilla, reference marks should include:

Midline of the maxillary rim

High Lip linePalatal Midline line through the middle of the incisive papilla and the mid-palatal raphe,

extending it onto the land area of the cast

Page 31: Complet dentures trail denture

Distal aspect of the incisive papillacentral incisors should be approximately 8-10.

mm anterior to this line

B. MandibleIn the mandible, reference marks should include:

Half way up the retromolar padCenter of the posterior mandibular ridge

Center of the anterior mandibular ridge

Selecting Anterior Teeth

Size

Shape

Shade -Tooth shade darkens with age, but the suggestion that there is any correlation with skin

and hair colour is suspect

Material -Porcelain teeth are becoming less prevalent

-Acrylic much easier to set and adjust; they will last life of denture (5-7 years)

Porcelain Acrylic -wear less - new materials wear well

-more translucent - better teeth have layers to improve transluc . -brittle - fracture easily if dropped - resilient - acts as shock absorber

-don't bond to base (stain, fall out) - chemically bonds to base -difficult to adjust/set - quieter; gum sticks

Selecting Posterior Teeth Form

Anatomic

-More esthetically pleasing (especially in the premolar region) – use for patients with

esthetic concerns, if there are no contraindications (severe ridge resorption, jaw

malrelations, uncoordinated jaw movement) -Use when a balanced occlusion is desired – they are easier to balance. Select a

tooth cusp angle similar to the condylar inclination

-Use when coordinated jaw movements are present

-Use when setting teeth for a single denture opposing a natural dentition

(easier to interdigitate

Page 35: Complet dentures trail denture

Setting Anterior Teeth

Page 36: Complet dentures trail denture

Mandibular anterior teeth incline similar to the maxillary teeth, but the incisal

edges are placed at a similar level to each other

Canines should be tilted more posteriorly than other anterior teeth, and should have amore prominent cervical neck

Page 37: Complet dentures trail denture

-Use when there are jaw size discrepancies (use in cross-bite situations, Angles

Class III)

-Use when a reduction in horizontal forces is desired (severe ridge resorption)

-Use when a patient has uncoordinated jaw movements are present

-Poorer esthetics, due to lack of cuspal inclines

-Set with no incisal guidance (no overbite) when used in a monoplane occlusal

scheme

Selection of tooth form also depends on: -Condylar and incisal guidance inclinations - easier to balance using a cusp angle

similar to the condylar inclination

-Curve of Spee - determined by the dentist

-Angulation of occlusal plane - determined by the dentist

Non-anatomic

The upper central incisor is placed with the incisal edge lying on the occlusal plane and the long axis diverging slightly from the midline

Page 42: Complet dentures trail denture

.The incisal edge lies in line with the rest of the

wax rim

Page 43: Complet dentures trail denture

The incisal edge of the maxillary lateral incisor lies about 1 mm above the occlusal plane. The

long axis is inclined palatally and distally

Page 44: Complet dentures trail denture

The maxillary canine is placed with the neck prominent and the long axis of the tooth per

pendicular to the occlusal plane

Page 45: Complet dentures trail denture

The imaginary roots of the artificial teeth (lateral incisor and canine) would interfere with each other. These

irregularities never appear in nature and should be avoided .

Page 46: Complet dentures trail denture

The labial surfaces of the upper central incisor 8 -10 mm in front of the middle of the incisive papilla. In addi tion, the incisive papilla lies

on the line joining both canines .

Page 47: Complet dentures trail denture

The tip of the ball point pen indicates the position of the incisive papilla. A line joining the cusp tips of the maxillary canines should pass through the distal surface of the incisive papilla

Page 48: Complet dentures trail denture

The gingival margin like those of young people should be contoured properly (dol ted line) .

Page 49: Complet dentures trail denture

When smiling gently, the upper incisors should contact the junction between the transitional and oral epithelium. About 3 or 4 mm of the labial surface of the upper inci sors is visible

Page 50: Complet dentures trail denture

After the upper posterior teeth are lost, alveolar bone resorption occurs upward and inward and thus the alveolar ridge becomes progressively smaller inward. In the lower jaw, according to resorption, the ridge seems 10 move somewhat buccally Frorn Boucher's prosthodontics treatment for

edentulous patients .)

continue to eat with bulg ing cheeks .
