Pharmaceutical equivalents whose rate and extent of absorption are not statistically different when administered to patients.
Bioequivalence
Generic Drugs are significantly less expensive than brand name drugs (patent medicine ) , but are equally as effective e.g CEFIGET = CEFESPAN
Prescribing by generic name is considered good prescribing practice and minimizes the risk of confusion to patients, and other healthcare professionals.
A large percentage of prescriptions are not filled due to the cost and sometimes patients don’t take the full dosage of their prescription in order to stretch out the amount of it.
Advantages
Prescribe generics, as this will enable the pharmacist to dispense any suitable preparation available in Pharmacy , avoiding expense and delay in medication process ,will result in :
pt: satisfication Improving our quality services Decreasing of wasting of time i.e on PHONE CALLS etc.
Patient adherence with our organization. Will solve the problem of space in pharmacy, inventory
mangment. Generic prescribing will increase the revenue of pharmacy so
we will to gather take a part in supporting of over all revenue of AKM-CCC.
Expected consequenceof prescribing generic
What doc and pt: think ???
These include:- if the medicine has a narrow therapeutic
index i.e warfarin, valporic acid , phenytoin and topiramate
Where modified release preparations are not interchangeable.
Where administration devices (e.g. inhaler or self injection) have different instructions for use
Where the product is a biological rather than a chemical entity i.e Vaccine .
When dnt need to switch brand
The UK now has one of the highest rates of generic prescribing in the world (83% in the community in England in 2008).

STUDIES
In Pakistan the use of medicines by generic i.e. up to 35%; even less than Bangladesh and Indonesia which accounts 78% and 59% respectively.

At present Pakistan is spending only 1.2% of GDP on pharmaceuticals and despite more than 40000 registered brands in the country.

A study was carried out to assess the generic prescribing pattern among medical doctors in Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Teaching Hospital, Zaria, Nigeria.
Result The results further showed that out of the 77,889 prescriptions
scrutinized, 48,451 (62.2%) were written using generic names only while 29,438 (37.8%) were prescribed using proprietary names. Refefnce:
