Varicose Veins And Treatment Varicose veins, also referred to as venous insufficiency, is a common condition in which the veins become enlarged, torturous and swollen. The superficial veins of the legs and pelvic area are usually affected but the veins in other parts of the body are no exception to varicose condition. Varicose veins can be seen (examined) superficially as they often appear blue, swollen, twisted and bulged rope-like-cords under the skin.Varicose veins can cause pain, swelling, fatigue, blood clot and skin discolouration with soreness and itching. If proper medical attention is not provided, varicose veins have the potential to worsen over time to develop into serious condition.

Veins are devoid of muscle tissues and pump deoxygenatedblood to the heart unlike arteries. The veins utilise the muscles from the feet and legs to return the blood to the heart against gravity. A series of valves in the veins prevent backward flow of blood and aid in unidirectional upward flow of blood towards the heart. When the valves in the veins become weak, damaged and do not function properly, they allow blood to reflux leading to pooling of blood. These swollen, bulged, elongated veins are called varicose veins. Thus varicose veinsare a result of abnormal circulation due to value ineffectiveness.

Risk Factors

• Age: Increasing age causes the veins to lose their elasticity • Heredity: If any of the family members have a history of varicose veins then you

have an increased risk • Gender: Women are more likely to get varicose veins than men because of effects of

female hormones on the vein walls – with prevalence rate of about 40 per cent in women and 25 per cent in men

• Obesity: Excess weight itself puts a lot of pressure on the veins • Prolonged standing: It can be an occupational hazard as jobs involving prolonged

period of standing cause increased volume and pressure in the lower limbs due to the effect of gravity

• Pregnancy: Increase in blood volume and hormonal effects lead to vein enlargement

Symptoms

♦ Aching pain in the legs ♦ On visual appearance, the veins look blue in colour, enlarged and twisted ♦ Muscle cramps ♦ Swelling in the legs ♦ Increased pain during standing and walking ♦ Itching of skin around the veins ♦ Tenderness around the veins ♦ Heaviness of the leg and leg muscles get tired easily ♦ Burning or tingling sensations

Treatment

If thesesymptoms bother you and do not respond to any home treatment, you should consider physiotherapy treatment or surgery. Also, in case the doctor suggests that the appearance of these veins can’t get any better with radiofrequency treatment, laser treatment or sclerotherapy, you can opt for a surgery. A minor surgery - vein ligation (tying off) and stripping (removing) is generally performed to treat this condition. Other procedures like stab avulsion or phlebectomy work well too. You can get treated for varicose veins at Apollo Day Surgery, wherein you will be discharged and can go home thesame day of the surgery.

Prevention

The underlying cause of the disease cannot be cured to prevent varicose veins. However, the following measures can be employed to relieve discomfort from existing varicose veins and prevent others arising:

Exercise regularly to improve leg strength and increase circulation Maintain a healthy body weight to prevent excess pressure on the legs Avoid sitting or standing for prolonged time Avoid crossing your legs while sitting Elevate your legs above heart level to increase venous circulation Avoid high heels
