북한의 정치범수용소는 김일성 김정이 우상체제를 유지하는데 있어 저해가 된다고 낙인찍힌

사람들을 사회와 동떨어진 곳에 분리시켜 격리 수용하는 거대한 유배지라고 할 수 있습니다.

이전에 북한 전역에 있었던 10여 개의 수용소가 통폐합되어 지금은 5~6개의 수용소가

존재하고 약 15만명이 수감되어 있는 것으로 알려져 있습니다. 수용소에 한번 수감되면

대부분은 살아서 나오기 어려우며 수감자들은 평생동안 하루 12시간 이상의 강제노동 및 각종

폭력과 고문에 시달리다 죽어가게 됩니다.

세이지는 북한의 인권문제를 더 이상 정치적 이념적 안경을 끼지 않고 있는 그대로 투명하게

바라보고, 이를 해결하려는 마음을 모으기 위해 전시회를 준비했습니다. 최악의 인권 위기상황에

놓여있는 정치범수용소의 수감자들을 두고 좌우를 논하고, 정치적 이해관계를 따지는 것은

어쩌면 한낱 정신적 사치일지도 모릅니다.

이번 전시에서 저희는 사실들을 무심하게 제시하는데 주력했습니다. 전시되어 있는 사실들을

찬찬히 읽어나가다 보면 그들이 직접 말을 걸게 될 것입니다.

사랑이 없는 그 곳을 보아 달라고, 잊지 말아 달라고,

그 대화가 여러분의 삶으로 울려퍼지기를 기대합니다.

The North Korean Political Prison Camp is a huge place of exile where the

political prisoners considered as threat to its regime are isolated from society.

The North Korean regime established 10 camps, and after a process of closure

and integration, 6 camps are still in operation, holding approximately 150,000

prisoners as of today. Most do not survive and return from their time, and prisoners

are daily subjected to 12 hours of forced labour and various forms of violence and

torture to death.

SAGE prepared this exhibition gather hearts wanting to solve the North Korean

human right issues, no longer through the lenses of political ideologies, but just

as it is. Perhaps the dispute on ideological differences of the left and right wings

whiles political prisoners are facing the worst abuse of human rights imaginable is

a luxury we simply cannot afford.

In this particular exhibition, we focused on presenting the simple, yet profound

truth. As you closely read on, the truths that are on display will begin to speak to

you, asking you to look at and not forget the place where love does not exist.

We hope that the very dialogue will continue to echo in your lives.

북한의 정치범수용소는 일반적으로 북한 체제에 위협이 되는 자들 (반공주의

자, 자본가, 기독교인, 최근에는 탈북자까지 포함) 과 그의 가족 3대를 사회로

부터 완전히 격리 수용하여 강제노동을 통해 처벌하는 곳을 의미한다.

한국에서는 주로 정치범수용소로 명명되고 있으나, 북한 내부에서는 ‘0호 관

리소’ 혹은 ‘완전통제구역’이라 불리며, 초기에는 ‘특별독재대상구역’이라는 명

칭을 사용했다. 또한 수용소인 것을 감추기 위해 수용소 정문에는 ‘0000 부

대’라는 표지판을 사용하는 것으로 알려져 있다.

북한의 정치범수용소는 1947년에 집단수용소를 설치한 것으로 시작하여 신

설과 이전, 폐쇄와 통합 과정을 거쳐 현재로선 6곳이 운영 중인 것으로 확인

되고 있다. 최근 정부자료에 의하면, 14호 개천, 15호 요덕, 16호 화성, 18호

북창, 22호 회령, 25호 수성 수용소가 운영되고 있으며, 약 15만 4천여명이

수용된 것으로 추정된다.

The North Korean Political Prison Camps generally refer to politi-

cal penal-labor colony where the political prisoners are isolated

from society with their three generation together and are pun-

ished through forced labor until their death. In North Korea, the

political enemy is considered as threat to its regime such as anti-

communists, capitalists, Christians, and recently defectors.

In South Korea, those camps are referred to as political prison

camps, but in North Korea, they are known to ‘kwan-li-so’ or ‘the

completely control district.’

The North Korean regime established camps in 1947, and af-

ter a process of establishment and relocation, closure and in-

tegration, 6 are in operation as of today. The Gaechon(#14),

Yoduk(#15), Hwasung(#16), Pukchang(#18), Hoeryong(#22),

and Chongjin(#25) political prison camps currently keep about

154,000 people in the camps according to the recent report of

government.

정치범수용소는 크게 완전통제구역과 혁명화구역으로 나뉜다.

완전통제구역은 한번 수감되면 출소할 수 없는 종신수용소이고,

혁명화구역은 일정 기간동안 강제노동을 한 후 형기를

마치면 석방되는 수용소이다. 북한의 정치범수용소는 모두

완전통제구역이나 유일하게 15호 요덕 수용소만이 혁명화구역을

지정하여 일부 정치범들을 석방시킨다.

수용소로 들어가기 전, 정치범들에게는 어떤 종류의 사법적 절차

(체포, 기소, 재판 등)가 제공되지 않기 때문에, 혁명화구역에 갇혀

있는 사람들조차도 본인의 형기를 알 수 없다.

완전통제구역에서는 김일성, 김정일에 대한 사상교육도 시키지

않고, 채광 및 영농 기술 등 노동에 필요한 기초적인 지식만을

교육시킨다. 수감자는 다시는 일반사회로 돌아갈 수 없으며 광산,

벌목장 등에서 처참한 강제노동에 시달리다 결국은 수용소 내에서

죽게 된다.

Prison camps are largely divided into two categories - complete

control districts are life imprisonment facilities, and revolutionizing

district are labour camps that allow prisoners to be released after

carrying out their sentence.

The North Korean political prison camps are for life imprisonment.

However, the Yoduk political prison camp (the Camp #15) is

divided into sections called the complete control districts where

the sentences are lifetime and the revolutionizing district from

which prisoners eventually can be released.

Since any judicial procedure shall not be provided the suspicious

political enemy and their family, people imprisoned in the

revolutionizing district cannot know of their sentence.

Complete control districts are life imprisonment facilities that do

not educate prisoners on the ideology of Il- Sung Kim and Jong-

Il Kim, but are only taught minimal knowledge such as skills

required for mining and farming. Once imprisoned, no one can

return to society, and the prisoner is subjected to merciless forced

labour in mines and lumber camps until he or she dies.

북한 정치범수용소는 한국의 교도소와 같은 집체형

건물의 형태가 아닌 외부와 차단되어 있는 폐쇄된

마을의 형태를 띠고 있으며, 마을 내에는 농장, 밭, 공장,

건설현장, 학교 등이 있다. 수감자들은 정해진 집에서

거주하면서 매일 새벽 5시 기상, 5시 30분에 노동을

시작하여 하루 종일 자신에게 주어진 작업량을 달성해야

한다. 수용소 내 학교에서는 덧셈, 뺄셈, 읽기, 쓰기 등

노동에 필요한 지식만을 제공하며 학생들도 예외없이

노동에 동원된다.

The North Korean prison camps are unlike South

Korean penitentiaries that are in the form of

a building, but in the form of a closed village,

surrounded at their outer perimeters by barbed-

wire fences punctuated with guard towers and

patrolled by heavily armed guards. People in

the camps get up at 5 a.m. and carry out their

assigned labor from 5:30 a.m. They are extremely

hard labored in mining, timber-cutting, or farming

enterprises. There is no exception for children.

Schools in the camp provide basic math, reading,

writing etc., in the purpose of conducting labor, and

students are forcibly labored.

일명 하모니카 집이라고 불리우는 정치범 가족마을

집은 볏짚으로 지붕을 만들고 흙토피라 불리우는 벽은

흙벽돌을 쌓아 만든다. 1개 통에 5~6가구가 거주하며,

흙으로 지은 집이라 비가 오거나 습기가 차면 한쪽으로

기울어져 집이 무너지는 것을 막기 위해 받침대를

세운다.

수용소에서는 옷과 이불 등 기본적인 가재도구가 거의

공급되지 않아서 수감자들은 대부분의 생활용품을

만들어서 쓰게 된다. 혁띠는 자동차 타이어 튜브를

쇠줄과 접합하여 사용하고, 양말은 발에 돼지가죽을

싸고 새끼줄로 고정하여 사용한다. 신발은 고무벨트

혹은 자동차 폐타이어를 가는 쇠줄 바느질하여

사용한다. 겨울에는 느릅나무를 쪼개 밑창으로 하거나,

쥐를 잡아 고기는 먹고 가죽을 밑창으로 대고 칡으로

끈을 엮어 감은 '자화족'을 만들어 사용하기도 한다.

유일한 고기 The onlymeat source

완전통제구역에서는 고기를 주지 않기 때문에 쥐고기는 유일

한 고기보충이며, 22호 관리소 안의 쥐들은 거의 멸종상태

에 있다. 때문에 쥐병 (유행성출혈열)에 무방비 상태인 그들

은 해마다 늦가을과 초겨울이 되면 수없이 시체로 변해갔다.

In the Camp #22, there are barely no rats

left. And the prisoners, who have no access

to medical help, die out of epidemic hemor-

rhagic fever (due to rats) every year during late

fall and early winter.

oners were not allowed to say anything even

if they were bleeding or had broken ribs. They

could only shed tears at the injustice.

구류장에 갇힌 정치범들에게 일주일에 30분씩

햇볕쪼이기를 시키는데 이때 정치범들은 해골같은 몰골로

겨우 밖으로 나온다. 남녀노소 할 것 없이 모두 삭발하고

하루 100g의 콩밥에 소금국을 받아 먹고 사는 그들은

햇볕쪼이기 시간에 경비를 서는 계호원 몰래 닥치는 대로

풀을 뜯어먹는다. 그러다가 들키면 흠씬 두들겨 맞고

때로는 죽기도 한다.

Political prisoners are allowed out of their cells

30minutes a week to get some sunlight. The

prisoners, men and women alike, have shaved

heads, and look like walking skeletons. They eat

100g of rice with “salt soup” (water with a dash of

salt), and so during their time out in the sunlight,

they eat all kinds of grass when the prison guard

is not looking. If they get caught, they are beaten

mercilessly, and sometimes die on the spot.

수골 골짜기에서는 정치범들의 비밀처형이 이루어졌다.

89년 가을경, 17반의 어떤 여자 정치범이 지도원과

부화(성관계)하여 임신한 사실을 알게 된 계호원은 칼로

그 정치범의 배를 갈라 태아를 꺼내 밟아 죽였다.

In the Su-gol Valley, prisoners are secretly

executed. In the fall of 1989, a prison guard,

having discovered that a female prisoner was

pregnant with another guard’s child, knifed

open the woman’s womb, took out the unborn

baby and trampled the baby to death.

도주하였다. 두만강에 차를 처넣고 중국에 넘어 갔으나

일주일만에 중국공안에 체포되어 북한에 이관되었다.

악에 받친 관리소장은 김일성의 권위를 훼손시켰다고

쇠줄로 코를 꿰고 발뒤축에 대못을 박아 정치범들을

동원하여 돌로 때려 죽이게 했다.

A 27-year old prisoner at the Camp #13 took a prison-

property jeep #580131 and escaped from prison. He

abandoned the jeep at the Tumen River and crossed the

border to China. But he was caught within a week by the

Chinese police and was sent back to North Korea. The

furious prison ward accused the prisoner of defying Il-

Sung Kim’s authority. He had the prisoner’s nose pierced

with an iron chain, and his feet nailed with a peg. The

prison ward ordered the rest of the prisoners to stone him

to death.

동안 매일 돼지먹이를 먹어 돼지들이 크지 못했다. 그들

The 6 groups of political prisoners who were

working at the mine construction ate pig food

for 3 months to the point the pigs were not

growing. They took out bits of rice, cabbage,

radish leaves, bone bits from the pig sty and

ate them. The remaining liquid portion of the

pig food were eaten together with rice. And

after eating the pig food, the prisoners gave

the pigs water.

오혜원과 오규원은 북한 요덕 수용소에 수감되어 있는 대한민국 국적의 자매이다.

혜원은 1976년 9월 17일, 규원은 1978년 6월 21일 독일 킬에서 태어났다.

당시 아버지 오길남씨는 독일 튀빙겐 대학에서 경제학을 공부하고 있었고, 어머니

신숙자씨는 독일에서 간호사로 일하고 있었다. 혜원과 규원은 당시 킬 필하모니

오케스트라 악장이었던 이반 페트로프로부터 바이올린을 배웠고, 1983년 큰딸

혜원은 크론스하겐에 있는 한 초등학교에 입학했다. 혜원과 규원은 독일 친구들과

선생님들로부터 많은 사랑을 받았다.

1985년 겨울, 두 자매의 아버지인 오길남씨는 북한에서 좋은 교수직을

제공해주고 아픈 아내에 게 최상의 진료를 보장하겠다는 북한 요원의 약속을

믿고서 아내의 반대에도 불구하고 가족들을 데리고 월북했다. 그러나 북한에

도착하자 오씨 일가족은 3개월간 외부와 차단된 채 세뇌교육을 받았고 오씨는

1986년 6월부터 11월까지 북한이 남한 내에 존재하고 있는 것처럼 위장하고

있는 한민전 산하 칠보산연락소에서 근무했다.

일년 후, 오길남 박사는 독일에서 유학하고 있는 남한 부부를 데리고

오라는 북한의 지령을 받고 독일로 가던 중 탈출하였고, 이 이유로 혜원과 규원은

어머니와 함께 1987년 말 요덕 수용소 ‘혁명화구역’에 갇히게 되었다. 수용소에

갇힐 당시 혜원은 만 11살, 규원은 만 9살이었다. 그리고 1990년대 중반 풀려날

수 있는 가능성이 있었던 그곳에서 더 이상 나올 수 없는’완전통제구역’으로

옮겨진 것으로 알려져 있다.

Hye-Won Oh was born in Kiel, Germany, on September 17, 1976, and

Gyu-Won Oh was born in Kiel, Germany, on June 21, 1978 to South

Korean parents. Gyu-Won played the violin well, while Hye-Won was

talented in painting and writing. Hye-Won entered elementary school

in Kronshagen on September 1, 1983, and she was beloved by

German friends and teachers.

In 1985, a North Korean agent approached Mr. Oh and offered

him a government position in North Korea, as well as free rst

class medical treatment for his wife, who was then suffering from

hepatitis. Despite his wife’s objections, Mr. Oh decided to accept the

offer, believing that the promise made by the agent was legitimate.

Soon, though, authorities ordered Oh to return to Germany and

recruit more South Korean students to live in North Korea. His wife

and daughters, he was told, could not accompany him. Enroute to

Germany, Oh turned himself over to authorities in Copenhagen, and

was granted political asylum. Mr. Oh was successful in his escape

from North Korea, but was unable to help his wife and daughtersee.

For this reason, Hye-Won and Gyu-Won were imprisoned with

their mother in the “Revolution izing District” of the Yoduk Camp

at the end of 1987. At the time of imprisonment, Hye-Won was 11

years old and Gyu-Won was 9 years old. Later, for unknown reasons,

they were moved to the “Completely Control District,” where one

must serve an unwavering life sentence.

When he was 9, his grandfather who was of

Jochongnyeon background, was charged with

espionage. His entire family, excluding only his

mother, was found guilty by association and was

imprisoned in Yo-Duk political prison camp in

the Southern Ham-Kyung province. He was held

under brutal captivity for 10 years. Published his

autobiography, “The Aquariums of Pyongyang”.

Korea, and was a talented person, graduating

from Pyongyang College of Arts’ Department of

Dancing, and teaching the dancer, Seung-Hee,

Choi. Her entire family was imprisoned for the

reason that Hye-Rim’s, Sung Jung-Il,Kim’s �rst

wife, was her friend. Both her parents died of

starvation. Published autobiography, “I was Hye-

Rim, Sung’s friend.”

captivity, his grandmother died of starvation

and he lost both his mother and brother to an

accident.

당대 최고의 이야기꾼 신불출임방울이 당대 최고의 ‘소리

꾼’이었다면 신불출은 최고의

‘이야기꾼’이었다. 공교롭게

도 두 사람은 같은 1905년생으

로, 살아 있다. 올해로 100살이

된다. 일본 식민지배 아래 청·

장년기 대부분을 보내야 했던 이

들은 타고난 재능으로 백성의 울

분과 서민의 아픔을 달랬다. “

쑥대머리구신형용 ~”으로 시작

되는 임방울의 <옥중가>는 동편

제와 서편제를 버무린 특유의 ‘

임방울제’에 실려 나라 잃은 슬

픔에 젖어 있던 뭇사람의 심금

을 울렸다.

무대에서 실수가 너무 잦아 예

명을 ‘난다’(難多)에서 ‘불

출’(못난이)로 바꾼신불출은

서민 생활에 밀착한 갖가지 만담

으로 웃음을 선사했다.

신불출은 구한말의 재담가 박

춘재의 공연을 눈여겨 본 뒤 만

담이라는 새로운 대중예술갈래

를 개척했다. 서민의 삶에 깊숙

이 뿌리내린 그의 만담은 광복

직후 좌익으로 빠르게 기울었다.

46년 ‘실소사전’이라는 만담

으로 ‘제국주의 미국’을 통렬

하게 공격하다 ‘설화사건’을

일으킨 뒤 이듬해 월북했다. 한

국전쟁 때 문화선전대 활동으로

57년에 공로배우가 된 데 이어,

61년에는 문예총 직속의 신불출

만담연구소 소장에 오르는 파격

적 예우를 받기에 이른다.

청국장을 빼면 무슨 장(長)이 남

나?” 대범한 만담으로 통제사회

를 풍자하던 그는 62년, 모든 공

직을 빼앗기고 협동농장으로 추

방된 뒤 숨진 것으로 전해진다.

소리꾼 임방울 탄생 100돌은 기

념행사로 요란한데, 현대사 최초

의 웃음꾼 신불출은 사람들의 기

억에서 너무 멀어졌다. <한겨레>

<한국웃음사>를 쓴 반재식씨

는 만담을 “조선시대의 재담과

텔레비전 시대의 코미디를 이어

주는 우리 웃음사의 연결고리”

라고 했다. 그러나 승승장구하던

신불출의 말로는 비참하기 짝이

없었다. 당의 완고한 문예정책도

천부적 광대의 끼는 어쩔 수없었

던 모양이다. “모란봉에 올라 돌

을 던지니 장에 맞더라. 두번째도

장,세번째도 장, 간장·고추장·

북한의 축구영웅조선의 마라도나 박승진

해방이전 평양에서 시계방을 운

영하던 어머니. 그 어머니는 47

세 당시 할머니 소리 들을 나이

에 아들을 낳는다. 47살에 본 외

아들 쥐면 부서질까 불면 날아갈

까 정말 애지중지 키웠는데 아들

이 2살 되던해에 남편을 잃었지

만 아들을 큰 사람으로 키우겠다

는 꿈을 안고 재가는 생각지도 않

으면서 악착스럽게 아들을 키웠

다. 그러나 철없는 아들은 어머

니 마음을 모르고 축구에만 미쳐

살았다, 수업 중간 몰래 빠져나

가 친구들과 공을 차서 혼나기 일

쑤였다. 그럴때마다 어머니는 매

를 들어보기도 하고 눈물로 애원

도 하면서 말을 들으라고 달래기

도 했다. 아무리 철이 없어도 불

효가 뭔지 모르는 나이였어도 아

들은 그런 어머니를 보면서 다시

는 어머니를 노여워하지 않으리

라 마음 먹으며 다짐을 했다. 그

러나 축구공만 보면 어느새 그런

다짐은 하늘로 날아가버리고 철

없는 아이는 성장해서 소년이 되

고 소년은 축구구락부에 들어가

제대로 축구를 배우기 시작했고

학교 졸업후 상업체육선수단에

입단하면서 직업축구선수로서

발을 내딛는다.

이 소년은 상업체육선수단 입단

과 동시에 발군의 기량을 선보

였고 결국 스무살의 나이에 국

가대표에 뽑히면서 잉글랜드로

향하는 비행기를 타게 된다. 당

시 23살아직도 앳띤 얼굴에 항

상 웃음 가득한 천진난만한 소

년의 모습을 하고 있던 선수 하

지만 이 미소년은 세계축구계를

놀라게하면서 세계축구계의 별

로 떠오르는데 그가 바로 66년

잉글랜드 월드컵에서 인민공화

국을 8강으로 이끈 박승진이다.

"북한의 인권상황을 다루되

쉰들러리스트와 같은 감동적

인 영화, 세계 어디에서도 통할

수 있는 그런 영화를 만들고 싶

습니다”

지난 78년 납북됐다가 86년 3

월 탈북한 뒤 현재 경기도 안양에

서 `안양 신필름 인스티튜드’를

운영하고 있는 신상옥 감독은 20

일 연합뉴스와 가진 인터뷰에서

북한의 인권을 소재로 해 영화를

만들 계획이라며 이렇게 말했다.

신 감독은 "북한 인권상황을

다룬다고 해서 반공.반김정일을

부르짖거나 흑백논리를 내세우

자는 게 아니다" 라며 "내 구상

은 쉰들러와 같은 영웅이 아니라

수난받는 북한 사람들의 삶을 있

는 그대로 그리자는 것" 이라고

설명했다.

영화제작 배경과 관련, 그는

"내가 직접 겪어봤듯이 북한의

인권상황은 세계 최악" 이라며

"세계의 양심이 북한 인권에

관심을 갖도록 하고 싶고 그래

서 영화개봉도 외국에서 할 계

획" 이라고 덧붙였다.

북한 인권을 다룬 영화이기

는 하더라도, 영화의 기본기능

인 오락성과 예술성을 모두 갖

춘 세계적 수준의 영화로 만들

어 국제영화제에도 나가고 판매

도 하려고 한다는 게 그의 생각

겨져 있던 한국의 춤은 최승희로

인해 무대를 찾았다.

최승희는 열 여섯살이 되던 해

한국을 찾은 이시이 바쿠의 공연

을 보고 무용수로서의 자신의 인

생을 결정했다. 이시이 바쿠의 수

제자로 들어갔지만 그의 무대는

일본이 전부가 아니었다.

1938년 최승희는 당시 프랑

스 파리에서 두 번째로 큰 극장

인 샬르 플레엘에서 유럽 첫 공

연을 가졌다. 그때 선보인 작품 '

초립동' 덕분에 유행에 민감한 파

리에서는 초립동 모자가 유행하

기도 했다. '초립동' 은 일찍 장가

가는 어린 총각이 새각시를 맞는

기쁜 마음과 부끄러움을 표현해

낸 작품이다.

이후 유럽 순회공연을 끝내고

다시 파리로 돌아왔을 때는 최승

희의 무대를 보기 위해 피카소,

장 콕도, 로망 롤랑 등 문화예술

계 명사들이 자리를 잡고 있었다.

프랑스의 '피가로' 지는 최승희에

대해 "선이 환상적인 동양 최고

의 무희"라고 극찬했다.

주은래는 최승희의 춤 중 '신노

심불로'를 좋아했다고 알려져 있

고, 가와바타 야스나리는 최승희

의 일본 데뷔 무대를 보고 장편 '

무희'에서 그녀의 예술세계를 다

루기도 했다. 하지만 해외에서 최

승희를 대표하는 춤으로 평가받

은 것은 '보살춤' 이었다. 여러 지

방의 무당춤을 직접 보고 만들어

낸 최승희만의 춤사위는 창조적

인 의상으로 다시 태어났다.

최승희는 신라장군 황창을 기

리는 춤인 '검무' 고려말기 황진

이가 고승을 유혹하려 춘 '승무'

뿐 아니라 '아리랑' '화랑의 춤'으

로 한국을 표현했다. 이 밖에 신

라시대를 배경으로 한 3막 4장의

무용극 '반야월성곡'과 영화로 제

작된 '사도성 이야기' 로 동양 발

레의 꿈을 춤으로 실현하기도 했

최초의 한류 엔터테이너 최승희 현대무용가

‘봄은 왔네 봄이 와~ 숫처

녀의 가슴에도 나물 캐러 간

다고...’

이 '처녀총각' 이라는 노래로

유명한 1930년대 인기가수 겸

배우 강홍식이 북한의 정치범 수

용소인 '요덕수용소' 에서 사망한

것으로 최근 밝혀졌다. 강홍식은

인기배우 최민수의 외할아버지

이자 '눈물의 여왕' 으로 불리던

전옥의 남편으로서 남북 분단 직

후에 월북해 북한 영화계에서도

배우 겸 감독으로 활발한 활동을

한 북한의 유명 인사였다.

김영순은 정치범 수용소에서

강홍식을 만난 것으로 증언했다.

특히 김영순은 강홍식이 강제 노

동에 시달리다 ‘펠라그라병’(

일종의 비타민B군 결핍증)에 걸

려 사망하기까지의 과정을 생생

하게 곁에서 보고 증언해 더욱 안

타까움을 사고 있다.

김영순은 당시 강홍식의 얼굴

이 흑인처럼 새까맣게 타 있었

고 소달구지를 끌고 다니는 모습

이 아직도 눈앞에 선하다고 말했

다. 강홍식씨는 김영순씨에게 “

영순아, 내가 영화에 다시 출연

할 수 있을까?”라고 묻는 등 여

전히 영화에 대한 열정을 가지고

있었다고 기억했다. 한 때 북한

의 공훈예술가로 칭송받던 강홍

식은 1949년 북한의 최초의 예

술영화 '내 고향' 을 연출했고 북

한에서 유명한 영화인 '최학신

일가' 에서 '리처드 목사'역을 맡

기도 했다.

한편 1975년경 김정일이 후계

자로 확정된 이후 영화 선전 사

업을 강조하여 북한의 첫 예술

영화 '내 고향'(19749년 상영)

의 연출가로 강홍식을 발탁하려

했으나 이미 그는 작고한 후였다

고 김 씨는 증언했다. 또한 김정

일의 호의로 그 가족들은 1975

년도에 수용소를 나갔으며, 이후

배우로 활동한 바 있는 강효선(

강홍식의 아들)은 영화 ‘민족

과 운명-노동계급편’에 공장

강선제강소 지배인으로 출연하

기도 했다. 김영순이 탈북을 하

던 2001년 당시 강홍식의 남은

가족들은 평양통일거리에 살고

나라를 빼앗긴 식민지의 현실.

어둠 속에서도 빛나는 존재, 그

것은 희망이었다. 베를린올림픽

마라톤에서 금메달을 딴 손기정,

다른 한편엔 춤으로 세계를 누빈

최승희(1911~1969)가 있었다.

한국 최초의 현대무용가이자

1920~30년대에 활약했던 '모

던 걸' 인 최승희는 춤으로 세계

무대에 오른 최초의 한류 엔터테

이너였다.

한국에서 첫 울음을 터뜨린 최

승희는 북한에서 마지막 숨을 내

쉬었다. 그러나 남북 어디에서도

인정하지 않으려 한 비운의 인물

이기도 했다. 한국에서 그는 친

일, 친북 인사였고 북한에서는 숙

청의 대상이었다.

최승희는 승무와 칼춤, 부채춤과

가면춤 등을 무대 위로 올려놓았

다. '춤은 화류계 여자들이 추는

것' 이라는 편견에서 벗어나 춤

을 예술로 승화시켰다. 기방에 숨

난 꿈을 꾸었죠

영화감독으로도 이름을 떨침. 성향이 자유분방해서

김일성 우상화에 방해가 되는 것으로 보아 함경남도

요덕 수용소에 수감한 것으로 추정 (김영순증언).

He was both a famous actor and singer in

the 1930’s and 40’s. He also gained fame by

direction North Korea’s �rst art �lm,

“My Hometown.” It is speculated that he was

imprisoned for his carefree nature, as it was

considered to be a hindrance in the process of

deifying Il-Sung, Kim (Testimony of Young-Sun,

Kim). He is also the grandfather of actor Min-Su,

Choi.

1966년 잉글랜드 월드컵 당시 포르투갈과의 경기를

앞두고 유흥을 즐겨 경기에서 패했다는 이유로 요덕

수용소에 수감됨. 당시 북한 축구계에서 큰 활약을 한

것이 참작되어 혁명화 구역에 수감되었다가 석방됨.

다른 선수들은 완전통제구역에 수감된 것으로 알려짐.

1966 England World Cup He was imprisoned in

a reformation camp, after consideration of the

contributions that he had made to North Korea’s

soccer, but was later released. It is known that

1947년 월북 이후 북조선문학예술총동맹 중앙 위원,

공훈배우 선출 등 정치적으로 성공했다는 평가를

들었으나, 당시 북한의 상황을 풍자했다는 이유로 요덕

수용소에 수감됨. 영양실조에 걸려 비참하게 죽음.

A renowned actor and comedian during Japan’s

colonial rule. After defecting to North Korea in

1974, he received review that he was politically

successful after being awarded different titles

and awards, but was imprisoned in the Yo-Duk

political prison camp for satirizing North Korea’s

situation by a slip of tongue. He tragically died of

undernourishment.

1930년대 한국 고유의 독자적인 근대 무용을

창시하여 세계적인 명성을 얻음. 광복 후 월북하여

최승희무용연구소 소장, 공훈배우, 인민배우 및

최고인민회의 대의원에 선출되기도 했으나 무용이

사회주의 현실에 맞지 않게 퇴폐적이라는 이유로

북창수용소에 수감되어 사망한 것으로 알려짐. 사후

복권된 것으로 확인됨.

She gained international fame in 1930’s for

founding Korea’s own unique modern dance.

After Korea’s liberation from Japan, she defected

North, and was given various titles and positions

but was imprisoned in the Buk-Chang political

prison camp because dancing was considered to

be decadent in a socialist society. She died while

imprisoned, and was reinstated after her death.

Reformation Camp

영화배우 부인 최은희가 1978년 1월 홍콩에서

북한 공작원에 의해 납북된 이후, 부인의 행방을 찾다

같은 해 7월 홍콩에서 납북됨. 여러번의 탈출시도로

승호리 교화소에 수감되었다가 석방됨. 이후 북한

신필름영화촬영소 총장을 맡으며 [소금], [불가사리] 등을

만들다가 1986년 아내 최은희와 함께 탈북.

After his wife Eun-Hee, Choi, an actress, was

kidnapped in Hong Kong in January, 1978 by a

North Korean secret agent, he was also kidnapped

in July of the same year in Hong Kong, while

looking for his wife. After his numerous attempts

to defect, he was imprisoned in Seung-Ho-Ree

reformation camp, but was released. He became

the president of North Korea’s New Films and

Movies Association, and produced movies like,

“Salt,” and “Star�sh.” He defected with his wife in

1986.

2002 부산아시안게임과 2003 대구유니버시아드

대회의 응원단으로 남한에 방문. 북한에 돌아간 뒤

남한에서 보고 들은 것을 일절 발설하지 않는다는 서약을

어겼다는 이유로 대흥수용소에 수감된 것으로 알려짐.

They visited South Korea as the cheering squad

for the 2002 Busan Asian Games, and 2003

Dae-Gu Universiad. They were imprisoned in

the Dae-Heung prison after they breached their

pledge to not divulge anything they’ve seen or

heard during their trips.
