The next two levels teach you the subdivisions of the 4 municipalities:• Beijing 北京 (16)• Tianjin 天津 (16)• Shanghai 上海 (17)• Chongqing 重庆 (38)

The municipalities are mostly divided into districts 区, some in the centre of the city, some suburban and some rural. There are also a few rural counties 县.

Chongqing 重庆 follows this pattern, but has a much larger administrative area, as the former cities of Fuling 涪陵 and Wanzhou 万州, and Qianjiang 黔江 prefecture were incorporated into Chongqing in the late 90s. Therefore, Chongqing has multiple population centers.

Shanghai and Tianjin each have a New Area 新区 as well as their districts and counties - Binhai 滨海 (Tianjin) and Pudong 浦东 (Shanghai). Pudong is known for being mainland China’s main financial centre.

As explained in the previous presentation, the words district/区/qū/qu1 and county/县/xiàn/xian4 can either be typed in the answer or omitted.

Despite being subdivisions of provincial-level cities, the districts of the municipalities are considered county-level divisions 县级行政区.
