Elizabeth II (Elizabeth Alexandra Mary) was born at 17 Bruton Street, London, on April 21, 1926. Her father was Prince Albert, Duke of York (the future King George VI). Her mother was the Duchess of York (born Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, later Queen Elizabeth). Elizabeth was named after her mother, great grandmother Alexandra and grandmother Mary. Elizabeth was thirteen, when World War II began, and she and her younger sister, Princess Margaret, were evacuated to Windsor Castle. In 1940 Princess Elizabeth made her first radio broadcast during the BBC`s Children`s Hour. Then she first met her future husband Prince Philip. She fell in love with him and began writing to him when he was in the Royal Navy.
In 1945 Princess Elizabeth joined the Women`s Territorial Service where she was trained as a driver. It was the first time when she was taught together with other students. Elizabeth was the first female member of the royal family who served in the armed forces. Elizabeth married Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh (born Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark) on November 20, 1947. On November 14, 1948, she gave birth to her first child Charles. Then the couple had four children.
Her father`s health declined during 1951 and Elizabeth replaced him at public events. She visited Greece, Italy and Malta during that year. In October she visited Canada and the President Harry S. Truman in Washington. In January, 1952, Elizabeth and Philip toured Australia and New Zealand. She was in Kenya when the world heard about her father`s death on February 6, 1952. He died from lung cancer. Elizabeth`s coronation took place in Westminster Abbey on June 2, 1953.
