IntroductionThe Higgs particle is named after

the British Peter Higgs who along two more scientists theorized its existence in 1964

One of the main goals of the Large Hadron Collider was to detect

the Higgs particle

LHC is the world´s newest and more powerful particle accelerator,

located in the Franco-Swiss border

Page 4: Boson de higgs

What is it?• The Higgs boson is

a subatomic particle predicted to exist by the Standard Model of particles

• It gives mass to particles that have mass

Page 5: Boson de higgs

Standard Model• The SM is a theory of how Universe works at the

subatomic level and is the basis´ for physicists to understand matter

• It has predicted successfully many particles, when they proved that Higgs Boson exists, the SM was completed

Page 6: Boson de higgs

To understand it • 1- Matter is formed by atoms, those atoms

dived into electrons,protons and neutrons

• 2-Electrons are indivisible, but protons and neutrons are formed by quarks

• 3-Quarks weights too much

Page 7: Boson de higgs

To understand it• 4- All the space is filled withe the Boson

field. The more a particle interacts with it, the greater mass it would have

• 5- It was difficult to prove its existence

Page 8: Boson de higgs

To understand it• We needed huge amounts

of energy (Big Bang)

• Once it is produced it lasts for a zeptosecond so we only see what it leaves behind

Page 9: Boson de higgs

How does it works?• Particles with mass moves through Higgs

field and interacts with Higgs particles• Through this interaction particles may

acquire mass and those who don't have they don't interact with it

Page 10: Boson de higgs

Why do we need it?• Last SM explanation did not explain why

some particles have mass and its relationship

• It is the responsible of giving mass to the particles

Page 11: Boson de higgs

Higgs Boson—Big Bang

• At the instant of Big Bang the Universe was comprised by pure energy particles

• Milliseconds after it cooled and Higgs Field developed

• Particles began to get mass as they cooled, slowed down and moved through the newly created Higgs field

Page 12: Boson de higgs

Higgs Boson—Big Bang

• Elementary particles developed and Higgs field continued to permeate spacetime

• Particle accelerators as LHC attempt to create the original conditions of Big Bang
