UAIPD05-0014“Ionic liquid Temperature Sensor”
Dr. Romana Reddy and Dr. Robin Rogers
• Mercury Thermometers• Temperature range from -39 degrees oC to 350 oC • Volatile and toxic even at low concentrations• Poses an environmental hazard associated with
storage and disposal of broken thermometers• Ethanol Thermometers• Temperature range from -110 oC to +78 degrees
Celsius• Fluid loss by evaporation is hard to avoid when
temperatures reach 78 oC
Liquid-In-Glass Thermometers
Ionic Liquid Thermometer
Thermometer filled with ionic thermometric liquid Tested ionic liquids are
reasonably inexpensive along with complete set of toxicological data available
Excellent thermal stability
Readily biodegradable Range of about -100 oC
to +400 oC
Chemical structures of ionic liquids used (a) [TEMA][MeSO4] (b) [P66614][NTf2]
Advantages Wider temperature
range than mercury or ethanol thermometers
Easy to calibrate with lower toxicity
• Environmentally safer associated with storage and disposal of broken thermometers
The red-dyed [TEMA][MeSO4 ], in baths of boiling water (left picture) and melting ice (right picture) for determining the marks at 100 ◦ C and 0 ◦ C respectively, while compared with the readings of a commercial thermometer (with blue filling fluid).
