With the recent weather, there has been a surge in the number of people making insurance claims due to burst water pipes.

But what causes water pipes to burst?

The short answer is that water expands as it freezes.  If this expansion happens inside a water pipe then the mounting pressure can burst the pipe open.  A pipe may very well be strong, but if this happens time and time again, the stress can weaken the pipe and then the inevitable happens

What about insulated pips?

Most pipes are protected with insulation and therefore do not reach the freezing temperatures that cause pipes to burst.  Occasionally insulation can fail or water pipes are exposed and the air temperature causes the water to freeze.

How can I prevent a burst pipe?

Many professionals recommend leaving a tap trickling and this tends to prevent water building up and the possibility of it freezing.

What to do if your water pipe bursts

If you haven't got there in time to prevent a burst pipe, then you need to know what to do.

1. Turn of the water at the mains.  This will stop any more water pumping through, but you will have to allow time for the water already in the pipe to stop following.  Once the water has stopped, you can attempt to fix the pipe ‐ if it is that kind of break.

2. Switch off electricity.  If you have ever seen a leak before, especially in a ceiling, you will know that they tend to culminate around a light fitting.

3. Limit the damage.  If the ceiling is bowing, then to limit the damage from your whole ceiling collapsing, use a sharp implement to make an incision in the plaster.

At this juncture you are likely to need to make an insurance claim. As with every large claim, your insurance company will employ a loss adjuster who assesses the damage and how much your insurance company should pay out.

The majority of the time, you are on your own making the claim and have to jump through the hoops of your insurance company, defending yourself.  Employing a loss assessor (the opposite of a loss adjuster) can really expedite your claim.  They work entirely for you, to get you the best possible payout from your claim.
