In what ways does your media product use, develop

or challenge forms and conventions of real media

products?

Question 1 Media evaluation

Lucy Rose portrays herself through her music as an indie folk pop/singer

songwriter. Our media products fit into this mould and conform to the conventions of

the genre and style Lucy Rose fits into. She represents herself as an artist who is in the lime light and not seeking for attention to

become a celebrity. Therefore she portrays her meta-narrative as an authentic singer

songwriter.

Lucy Rose as an artistHer real media products on the left ours on the right.

This is our digipak front cover compared to her real media products. Our media product is conventional as the front cover has the artist on it clearly and is looking at the camera as she is doing in one of her front covers. The other cover is in nature as is ours which is typically conventional of a singer/ songwriter.

A typical convention of her work is also her melancholy look and stable position for example she is not running or jumping. Neither does it look as if she is posing for a photo shoot making her look ethereal.

A conventional Promotional campaign

A conventional visually links the artist with the album. This can be done through an image of the artist or a key symbol of the artist if well known.

As we can see here the real album cover fits into conventions of a promotional campaign . As does ours. Our album cover does this by including an image of the artist. The real media product also does this. Other aspects linking these two album covers is the font and they artist is looking at the camera. This therefore connects to the artist through visual signifiers of the artist and constructs a meta-narrative.

Generic conventions of music videos: Andrew Goodwin

Goodwin states that within music videos a common convention is that the visuals within the video connect with the lyrics. For example in music videos such as in Jake Bugg Messed up Kids. Above there is a screenshot from the music video in which the music states there's kids on the corner with no money. For our music video we have done this by involving lip syncing and shots of the character looking sad connecting the visuals to the music.

Lyrics: “Remember how we were”

Lyrics: “The messed up kids there on the corner with no money”

For the music video the text is more closed rather than polysemic. There is more than one line of action which controls the audiences pathway of thought. The presence of two lines off action adds narrative fuzz, this therefore makes the video engaging and repeatable to watch. Which is similar to other music videos and artists conforming to the conventions of this genre. There are examples of this on the next two slides.Narrative based storyline tries to add narrative fuzz. The fact that the audience could view this product in an ambient way suggests that the artist.

Goodwin Combination of Performance and Narrative

Goodwin states that a music video either has to be perceptual or a combination of performance and narrative. An artist such as Cloud control similar to Lucy Rose has done this as we can see from the photos of the man above. Goodwin states this to create a sense of para-social intimacy, believing that we now know the artist at a social level. There are both performance and narrative shots in this video as in ours and other Lucy Rose videos such as like an arrow in the next slide.

Like an Arrow By Lucy Rose

Here we can see similarities in our video to hers conforming to conventions of her real media products. For example the shots are all in nature as in our video many shots are also in nature. This connects the artist to the landscape connoting a hippy independent feel.

Page 7: Q1 pp finalmost

The top image conforms to the conventions as the artist is appearing in the music video lip syncing. The framing is also conventional using the rule of thirds and a medium

close up shot. The bottom one of our shots is also conventional due to that the artist is present and the long

shot creates a sense of anchoring her within her environment. The environment of nature that she is in is

conventional of her music videos as shown on the previous slide.

Our footage compared

Summary

Therefore we have constructed Lucy Rose as an introverted singer/songwriter that conforms to most conventions of a singer/songwriter. For example her ethereal meta based narrative which fits into her unique singer/songwriter genre. Lucy Rose as an artist is not objectified and this can be seen throughout ours and hers work. This is conventional and can be seen in other singer/songwriters such as Laura Veirs above. This is constructed due to the composition of the shot being just her face and the mise-en-scene. For example her clothes are not scantily cut and her glasses connote intelligence.

We have constructed a hetero-narrative as even though there is no kiss there is an assumption of love within the music video and other media texts created with a man.
