St. Paul’s Apartments hosts Health FairLocal health service providers and non-profits gathered at the Apartments for a health fair earlier this year. For the latest educational events at St. Paul’s call us or visit www.StPaulsHome.com.
Steve Suess is chairman of St. Paul’s Board of
Directors.
Q: How long have you lived in Belleville?
A: In 1972, I began my career as a junior high language arts teacher at
Signal Hill School in West Belleville. I fell in love with the community and decided to
make my home here. Both of our children are graduates of Signal Hill School. After 13 years of
teaching, I went into administration in the Lindbergh School District for the next 23 years. Upon retirement in
2008, I became the head of the education department at Lindenwood University-Belleville. I will be married to my wife, Barbara, for 40 years this November. Barbara is a media specialist in the Mascoutah School District.
Q: What inspires you about St. Paul’s Home?
A: Several things inspire me about St. Paul’s Home. First, it is part of the history and fabric of St. Paul United Church of Christ, which is my church. Secondly, it is the place we chose when my mother needed care. We knew that a faith-based facility had the same priorities as our family, and we weren’t disappointed.
Q: What do you see in St. Paul’s immediate future?
A: In St. Paul’s immediate future, I see the planning and development of new and improved facilities as well as the continuation of the current
services which are second to none.
Q: What do you want residents and families to know about you?A: I want families and elders to know that all of us on the
St. Paul’s Home Board are here to serve them and to make their experience at St. Paul’s the most positive and
fulfilling that it can be. We believe in servant leadership.

This spring, St. Paul’s Home, rooted in faith, is blooming where it’s planted.
It gives me great pride to see our staff go above and beyond for our residents and their family caregivers.
St. Paul’s Home and Apartments staff members are commit-ted to the highest qual-ity of resident care and engagement.
Since our groundbreak-ing for the retirement apartments more than 25 years ago, St. Paul’s Home has seen much growth in the need
for residential options for seniors in Belleville.
We continue to share the story of our residents who are finding our community to be a place they can have faith in, a place with activities and services that help their families feel at home and at ease that they’re with us.
Whether it’s with a health fair to educate and inform residents and the community at large or a special holiday celebra-tion,
St. Paul’s Home and Apartments reaches out and celebrates our elders.
We have a long history of serving as a faith-based nonprofit mission in Belleville and thank our residents, families and staff for being part of our St. Paul’s Home and Apartments family.
Sincerely,
SusanSusan FranklinExecutive Director
If you’ve enjoyed the beau-ty of St. Paul’s landscap-ing you are witnessing the touch of Bob Darr, an avid volunteer who says he gives back to St. Paul’s because they give so much to him. He’s part of a team who takes care of thelandscaping for the community.
“I’m a giver not a taker. You don’t receive until you give. By giving, I receive ‘feeling good.’ I don’t do it for accolades or anything,” Darr said. “If something needs to be done you just do it. Just give back.”
A semi-retired landscaper by trade, Darr’s mother, Henrietta has resided at St. Paul’s Home for nearly four years.
“She’ll be 95 in July. She’s doing really well and every-body at St. Paul’s Home is really good to her,” Darr said. “If I am walking my mom down the hall, somebody in the kitchen or a nurse’s aide all say ‘Hi, Henrietta!’ They don’t have to do that. Everybody smiles.”
The Darr family has had long-standing ties to St. Paul’s Church, which is an overseer of St. Paul’s Home
and Apartments. “We’ve always been mem-bers of St. Paul’s Church from since I was a little kid,” Darr said.
He enjoys talking to the people at the community and appreciates the staff at St. Paul’s Home for all they do for Henrietta.
“People do a little extra and go out of their way, whether it’s serving food or clean-ing. You can tell everybody enjoys what they’re doing,” Darr said. “Everybody smiles and you don’t have the turnover rate that all the other nursing homes have.”
