Basque Pelota was a demonstration sport at the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City. It was the third time that the sport was included in the Olympic program; it was an official Olympic sport at the 1900 Games in Paris, and a demonstration sport in 1924. It was included as a demonstration sport once again at the 1992 Games in Barcelona. Basque Pelota has only once been officially competed for at the Olympics in 1900. At the 1900 Summer Olympics, a Basque pelota tournament was contested. Only two teams competed, so only one match was played. The score is unknown. The competition was held on 14 June.

A OF A BASQUE SPORTMAN :

There are some Basque athletes that have already participated in the Olimpics, for example, Julien Abasolo.

In 2008, the mountain bike factory Orbea produced a bike for Julien Abasolo. He won gold at the Beijing Olympics and he has become the company's totem.Abasolo has been named the Michael Schumacher of mountain biking - he dominates the sport, having won four World Championships, 17 World Cups and two Olympic gold

medals. He is also at his best in the rain.

Julien director says it's a unique athlete

Not only Julien Abasolo has taken part in the Olympics games, but Martin Fiz (Marathon), Leire Olaberria (cycling) and Naroa Aguirre (athletics).

VOLUNTEERS

Our volunteers will make the Games happen – we call them London 2012 Games Makers.Volunteers have been integral to both Summer and Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games since they were used for the first time at London 1948. So in 2012, the volunteer programme will be coming home to the city where it all began! There are 32 teams (also known as functional areas, or FAs) who need Games Makers and we have divided them into 10 departments, below. Click on each of them to find out more about individual FAs and the sorts of volunteer roles within them. Each team needs a different number of Games Makers – some require fewer than 50 while others need a few thousand. Most roles will be Games-time specific, but some will require volunteers to be available from spring 2012 for pre-Games preparation.

LONDON AMBASSADOR: London Ambassadors will welcome visitors from all over the world during the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. They are looking for volunteers to be the face of London; people who are passionate about the capital and want to tell millions of people about the hidden treasures that makes London one of the best capital cities in the world.
