4. Read the text and guess the name of the legend.

In olden times there lived in Mongolia an able man whose name was Khukhoo Namjil. He possessed an incredibly beautiful voice. One day he was sent into the army. There he was recognised for his nice voice and was freed from all work. When his term neared its end, Khukhoo Namjil asked the captian to give him some work to do outside the camp. The officer accepted it. When he was watering the animals at the river, singing, a girl rode up to the singer and invited him to come to her and sing for her parents. She asked him to sit on her horse with her and close his eyes. After a short ride, they came to a ger.

The parents asked him to sing for them for a few days.

Khukhoo Namjil politely replied: “If I don’t herd the horses, I will be punished.” “If you stay here, I will send out a man to watch over your horses,” said the host. Khukhoo Namjil stayed, sang and fell in love with the girl. When he departed, Namjil said, “When my term as a soldier is over, I will come to you.” “When your term finishes, I will ride out to meet you”, the girl replied. A month later Khukhoo Namjil returned to the girl’s parents. He had a pleasant life, but he often thought about his homeland. The girl said, “I will give you a precious stallion which will carry you home in the morning and in the evening bring you back to me. If you don’t stop before you reach your ger and give the stallion a few moments to rest and hide away his wings, people will see you. Do not forget this.”

Khukhoo Namjil came home. He herded his flock until the evening then he vanished. One morning his wife saw the winged horse. Quickly, she thought: “If I cut off the animal’s wings, my Namjil won’t vanish any more.” Then she got a pair of scissors and cut off the animal’s wings. The horse sank to the ground and died.

Khukhoo Namjil mourned and wept, did not eat and found no sleep. He carved a horse’s head from a piese of wood. Then he built a two-stringed fiddle and fixed the carved horse’s head to its neck. He began to play sad melodies. This is a legend about how thw horse head fiddle, the national instrument of Mongolia came into existense.
