Embed Size (px)

DESCRIPTION

Undergraduate seminar examining the 2009 L'Aquila earthquake and the accompanying controversy surrounding the prosecution and conviction of 6 scientists and a civil servant for their failure to adequately communicate seismic risk to the citizens of the town in the lead-up to the tremor. Delivered alongside companion pieces covering the legal and science communication elements of the case.

Major  earthquakes  are  oaen  followed  by  reports  that  they  were  predicted,  or  at  least

anNcipated,  but  no  claim  of  a  successful  predicNon  of  a

major  earthquake  has  survived  close  inquiry

Page 23: Earthquake Science and the L'Aquila Controversy

We  understand  how  and  why  they  occur,  so  why  can’t  we

predict  them?

Real  rocks  are  irreducibly  complex

We  can  evaluate  their  average  behaviour,  but

exactly  which  rock  will  fail  when  is  beyond  us

Looking  for  paSerns  in  this,  the  biggest  surprise  is  probably  that  the  2009  quake  took  so  long  to  happen

Page 36: Earthquake Science and the L'Aquila Controversy

So  who  thinks  the  L’Aquila  7  were  guilty  of  something  now?
