Belize ist ein Staat in Zentralamerika. Er war früher unter dem Namen Britisch-Honduras (offizieller Name: British Honduras) bekannt, welcher der Name der ehemaligen britischen Kolonie war.Belize ist der einzige mittelamerikanische Staat, der Englisch als Amtssprache hat. Etwa ein Drittel der Bevölkerung von Belize haben afrikanische Vorfahren. Dadurch hat sich in diesem Staat eine eigenständige Kultur ausgebildet, die von den in den Nachbarstaaten lebenden Mayavölkern beeinflusst ist. Nationalfeiertag ist der Unabhängigkeitstag, der 21. September. Seit 1981, dem Jahr der Unabhängigkeit, ist Belize Mitglied des Commonwealth of Nations. Belize befindet sich im Südosten der Halbinsel Yucatán und grenzt im Norden an Mexiko und im Westen an Guatemala. Im Osten von Belize liegt die Karibik. Belize ist das einzige Land Zentralamerikas, das keinen Zugang zum Pazifik hat.
