Así se forma 1: Identifying gender and

number: Nouns and articles

Nouns are masculine or feminine (gender).

Nouns are singular or plural (number).

Definite articles (the) or indefinite articles (a, an) are also either masculine or feminine and singular or plural, to agree with the noun.

Los estudiantes están en clase. Un alumno escribe en

el cuaderno. Dos alumnos escriben en la pizarrra. La

profesora conversa con unas alumnas. Hay una

computadora en el escritorio.


Masculine and feminine nouns

Most nouns ending in -o & most nouns ending in -l or -r are masculine.

Most nouns ending in -a & all nouns ending in -ión or -d are feminine.

about going places: Ir + a + destination

To state where you are going…

Conjugate the verb ir (to go) and add a (to) + destination.

Note the different uses of the present tense.

To talk about actions that occur in the present.

Voy al gimnasio ahora.

To talk about recurring or habitual actions.

Voy al gimnasio todos los días.

¿Vas con frecuencia?

To talk about actions in the near future when accompanied

by phrases indicating the future.

María va a una fiesta esta noche.

Así se forma 3: Talking about actions in

the present: Regular -ar verbs

When you look up a verb in the dictionary, you will only find

the infinitive form (verbs ending in -ar, -er, or -ir).

How to conjugate regular -ar verb: Drop the -ar from the

infinitive and replace it with the ending indicated. The endings

correspond to the subject of the verb.

(Yo) Hablo francés.

(Nosotros) Hablamos español.

¿Hablas (tú) italiano?

• La mayoría de las universidades hispanas son

instituciones públicas.

• En muchos países (countries) hispanos, el gobierno

(government) financia el costo de la educación en la

universidad; los estudiantes solo compran los libros.

• Sin embargo (however), también existen universidades

privadas.

• Los estudiantes universitarios normalmente viven con sus

padres porque estudian en la misma ciudad (the same city),

es más económico y porque, por lo general, no hay

residencias estudiantiles.

Hacer (to do) and salir (to leave, go out) are irregular only in

the yo form.
